in order to compensate for some shortcomings in the new speakers i installed (kicker ks 6.2 components) i increased the equalizer settings to enhance the midrange (i dont know what frequencies, but lets say the middle three)

what happened was i began to hear stray sounds similiar to what you would hear if you had a bad rip of a cd..

i initially thought that my HDD was damaged due to the high tempatures in the area (new jersey)...but then rememberd that i tweaked the equalizer...and returned the settings back to flat and the problem went away...

anybody have similiar problems or think of a reason why i should hear these pops and squeaks when using the equalizer....the problem was evident at all volume levels

thanks,
ed

The first thing - are you boosting the mids above zero, or lowering the high/low? Remember, boosting may result in clipping. You are best off lowering the other ranges instead of raising the mids.

definatly raising the gain above 0....but not all that much...and while i did this on saturday i only noticed it last night after the unit was baking all day

and it is not a clipping sound by definately a bad rip

Most likely, it's one of these problems, and not related to your equalizer settings.

However, regarding the equalizer, don't boost too far above 0db, as was already stated in this thread. You're better off reducing other frequencies than significantly boosting one, as described here.

Thanks Tony...i am sure it was caused by me boosting the desire frequencies rather than lowering the others as it plays fine when the frequency curve is flat....

But I thought you said it didn't sound like clipping.

Okay, if it plays fine with a flat frequency curve, then yeah, the EQ is the issue. Cut instead of boost is your solution.

Well, digital clipping does sound a lot different than analog clipping.

ya...reread the FAQ and that is what was posted....definatly sounds like chirping...i am thinking it is a shortcoming of the speakers as i had infinities in before (which i fried with my new amp) and i didnt have such issues

Question: When you get this clipping sound, what is the volume level of the empeg itself set to?

If it's well below 0db, you shouldn't get clipping no matter how high your EQ is cranked.

For instance, if your empeg is set to -20 db on the volume scale, and you've boosted an EQ band up to +7, then the net gain on that band is actually at -13 and should still be OK. (In Theory.)

*Chirping* sounds? Digital clipping would tend to sound like a crackle.

I've sometimes heard amplifiers make a chirping sound when they overheat. Wonder if it's the amplifier.

i have the empeg fixed at 0 db and it feeds into my clarion HU....i am running it through a MB Quart 200wpc amp into kicker components (big mismatch as speakers can only handle 125wpc peak)

now that it has cooled off here (literally) i will try it again to see if heat was causing it

Yeah. 0db on the empeg volume, plus a frequency boost past 0db on the equalizer, would probably cause digital clipping. Chances of that increase if you're also using the auto volume adjust or bass/treble boost features built in to hijack.

brad....

I need to drive to Detroit so you can tune mine correctly!

(I do wish your guide had pointers for the 4 speaker EQ settings, but maybe I'm missing it)

I can't ever seem to get enough or the correct mid-bass with my setup. I have the rear controlling my sub and the front controlling my front door components. I get a lot of highs and boomy bass. Not much in the middle. This trouble started when I decided to redo all my crap though. Was much better before.
