Hi all!
Today I wanted to replace my harddrive.
But I cant' connect my empeg to any software except hyperterminal.

Greetings!

Well, at the moment, it looks like there is only one drive physically in the machine based on the boot log. - hda: IBM-DJSA-230, 28615MB w/1874kB Cache, CHS=58140/16/63

Is this the new drive that you were installing? Is it the old one? Is there anything on the hard drive connected?

Basically, from your log, this looks like a brand new drive, and that it cannot find the boot partition and root filesystem. - Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

If this is the new drive, you probably need to load the builder software to create the filesystems needed (this is a link to Mark's updated version for larger drives), and then you would need to reinstall the player with the upgrade file.

To load the builder software, download the linked file. Run the emplode upgrade utility, load the builder in. Make sure you have the player unplugged until the upgrade utility actively starts looking for the player. You only have a few second window (if that) to catch the upgrade loader on the empeg's firmware. Once that upload completes, the player should reboot. Yank the power immediately and set up hyperterm for another capture. Plug in the player - the upgrade file now should rebuild the partitions and filesystems on the brand new drive and perform a stress test (infinite loop). Your hyperterm connection will allow you to watch the progress, note any errors, hit "return" if needed, etc.

If that goes well, redo these steps with the 2.0 developer final software for the empeg. I see from your boot log that alpha3-11 was loaded, but best to start with 2.0 until you get things stable.

Edit: linked builder & added more detail

Hi Paul!

Thanks for your reply.
It is exactly as you write, it's an empty disk. The main point is I can't connect to the player, since it doesn't accept any serial connection after bootup.
I can see the bootup if I connect hyperterminal, but I can't use empegupgrade.exe or emplode or whatever, it just doesn't connect. (even if I boot without hyperterminal connected)
BTW I have a Hijack Kernel and I set the serial port to "Player".
What do I have to do to connect to the riocar? I think that's the point...

EDIT: I managed to load builder.upgrade, But there was an error: "couldn't find pump".
Now the player repeats endlessly:

I will try again!

This means there is some kind of data error. Likely a loose connection on the cable or the IDE header. You must solve that problem before the builder software will work.

Once you've taken care of the issue with the IDE hardware, make sure to follow all the steps in the drive upgrade guide.

Your best bet is to use software version 2.0 final to make sure everything is working and stable. Once it's all OK and everything is working correctly, then you can experiment with the V3 alphas.

I thought it was just some kind of delay in spinup as part of the boot, given that the last four entries before the disk was seen and recognized were correct. This is correct, though - if there is a hard error, that must be corrected first. It would not hurt to double check your connections, just in case.

As for the pump error, I am wondering if you were able to successfully load the builder. The loader is in protected flash, but it is a very short time window to get it in place. You should run the uploader software, and have it sitting there, waiting for the player before you actually plug the player in to power.

Nope. Wrongo. Buzzzzzt! Wrong answer, but thanks for playing!

Those messages are "normal", and just mean (in this case) that the drive has yet to finish it's hard reset/POST, and as a result has not yet enabled it's output buffers.

If the *final* "ide_data_test" messages show a mismatch, then THAT is a problem. But in this particular case, the final reads were just peachy-fine. So there's no known/suspected drive connection issue here.

Sorry. Didn't realize those messages would be present in normal cases.

So, ide data test messages before the drive identification are normal, but after the drive identification indicate trouble?

Also: The ide data test messages are a hijack feature, correct? You wouldn't get that with a normal kernel?

Thank you guys for all your ideas!
the problem was: I wasn't on time! the time window to run the upgrade builder is defenitely short and it seems i was always a little too late...

I managed to do start the upgrade enough quickly and it worked perfectly.

thanks again!

Excellent!!! Congrats!

Tony, would it be worthwhile to add a link / info about the upgraded builder for large drives in the upgrade FAQ? I know the text about not plugging in until asked is there, but it is lost in the text body. Perhaps that can be bolded or stressed a bit more heavily somehow?

No. These only appear before the drive identification. The important bit is, that the final few such messages should not show bit mismatches. Eg, here are the final ones from the log he actually posted:
Quote:

ide_data_test: wrote 0x0000 read 0x0000
ide_data_test: wrote 0xffff read 0xffff
ide_data_test: wrote 0xaaaa read 0xaaaa

Right. With a vanilla empeg kernel, those messages don't appear. And so on a broken system we'd just see mysterious crashes later on, without as good a clue as to what the problem is.

Cheers

I did that weeks ago.

Mark, thanks for the details regarding those messages in Hijack. I will put up a FAQ entry, and update the hard disk error FAQ about it.
