Anyone had this/know a solution?

I downloaded the emplode-v1_02.exe and wanted to install it on my PC
(WinNT4.0).
During the install (copying of the files) I get an error:

An error occured during the move data process: -119
Component: Shared Files
File Group: Share registering DLLs
File: C:\WINNT\System32\OLEAUT32.DLL

I tried to download the emplode-v1_01.exe and to install it, too - the same error.

I tried to remove the original oleaut32.dll and reinstall emplode - same error.

When clicking "OK" Button the install quits and I can't start emplode anymore.

Any hints?

At a first guess, I would say the DLL was in use. Try a reboot, and move / rename the file directly (if needed).

That was what I tried first, but it was not in use.

Error -119 means that the DLL didn't self-register properly.

I don't know why that would happen on your particular machine, but at least that's what the error message means.

To be honest, as an InstallShield programmer myself, that self-registration crap is a big headache. For certain installs, I've been forced to deliberately disable that particular error message on occasion.

This is just a shot in the dark, but if the file itself got installed, you might want to try running regsvr32 on it to see if you can get it to self-register by hand.

I tried the regsvr32 but it failed with the error:

DllRegisterServe in oleaut32.dll failed. Return code was 0x80070005

I'm sure my problem is refering to my PC not the installation routine or the dll of empeg's (rio's) emplode-software.

But maybe someone can tell me how to solve it without reinstalling my machine...

No, I can't. The dll is installed in the system32 directory anyway.

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, 80070005 is a general "Access Denied" error.

What OS were you running again? Was it an NT security permissions error, or perhaps that "windows file protection" crap in Win2K?

Hmm - that could be an idea - I'm logged on as a Domain Administrator - as I'm in a domain. But I'll try logging on as the local machine's administrator and then install it again (even though the domain admin has admin rights on my machine..). I'll tell you the result.

If that turns out to be the problem, report it officially and tell the Empeg guys that I've got some InstallShield code that allows them to check if the user has local machine admin rights if they want it.

I'd do so - but it was not the problem. Any other ideas?

Do a search for the specific dll in the registry, see if you can find it and remove it there, then reboot.

Disclaimer - This could be very dangerous, and could do nasty things if you mess up your registry. But you already know that...

Wait. SP6 didn't install, and errored in the same way, or it went in but emplode still won't load?

Just for the heck of it, you might want to go out to Install Shield's knowledge base and look up that DLL and the error 119. Perhaps it's a known problem.

Greetings!

Hmm... OK. Are there any issues with scandisk (is the file corrupt?) or file system problems? You may also want to try to boot into command line mode and (attempt to) destroy the file from there.

-119 is just the IS error code for "Failed to register DLL". The knowledge base really only covers programmer remedies, not user. The only time I had this it related to actual write and access permissions for the user installing the package - maybe there is:

a RO permission set on the target directory
admin priviledge needed to overwrite/install a DLL

Have you thought about the size of the registry hive, as well? Try increasing it and re-booting.

I got the "comexplorer" program from a friend. You can see which dll's are registered and unregister them.
He told me that the oleaut32.dll is a system dll. I should try to unregister it via comexplorer and then rename the dll, then reboot.
The risk is that it's possible that the system can't start any more without that dll..

Maybe I'll try when I have a bit more time... I'll tell you the result.

Problem solved.

I haven't found a solution for my problem. But after some hacking in my registry with comexplorer and unregistering/registering dll's and some blue screens my NT couldn't boot and a repair didn't find a NT install. So I installed my PC on W2k and now I'm back with emplode v1-02 installed.

I'm sure this problem was related to my very complex and (after 3 years running) not very clean install. So don't mind any more - if anyone did...
