Saw a quick blurb on the Today Show, I think, this morning while at the gym. They were showing the latest techno gadgets for automobiles and lead off with the RioCar. It was a very short blurb, less than 30 seconds...
Of course I was able to pipe up, "I have over 2000 songs on mine so far!" No one seemed impressed...

Yeah, I noticed that they were going to do that when I was heading out of the house this morning.
I told the Tivo to grab it, so if it's any good, I'll digitize it and put it online this weekend..

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever hacked deep enough into the Tivo boxes to actually pull the MPEG files directly off its hard disk? It seems to me that if you wanted a really pristine digitized file, that'd be the way to go. ___________

yes, people have hacked it, but nothing has been released that will go to that level. Frankly... recording at best quality, and sampling off with my DV setup isn't going to introduce that many errors....
Besides, I don't have the ethernet hack on my Tivo... just the 130Hr hack.

yes.. the main tivo hackers (tivo.samba.org) have hacked an ethernet card into the box, and have figured out how to read the mpeg streams directly from the data area, but will not be releasing any of the code, because TiVo asked them not to. it could _really_ damage TiVo if they did, the copyright holders would be all over them. and that'd be no fun.
it would be really great tho, to be able to watch shows on my roomie's tivo from mine.. maybe someday..
I'm thinking about getting a TivoNET adapter, so i don't have to use a phone line for the program downloading.. I could setup PPP, but ethernet would be more fun :)

Hey Tony, do you know if they got that blurb from somewhere on the empeg site? If not I'm suprised at how well it pretty much sums it up. It's not technical at all, but that's what people watching the Today show are looking for
Just kidding. Anyway, I was kinda impressed. Plus most people forget to mention that you can take it out to hook up to a stereo. DiGNAN
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, etc.

This is one of the advantages of using a major PR company (which we couldn't afford when we were empeg).

I thought that for the 30 seconds it takes to read it, it's a great review. quite succinct.
