Just wanted to share my happiness - No more "Disk not found", no more music-less drives to work. No more (dangerous) removal of the empeg from the car (except to sync). Those seagate EE25.1 series drives really do work. Too bad they are "only" available up to 40GB. This AM was the coldest so far this winter - minus 16 F on my in-car thermometer, and the empeg ran flawlessly. $150 for 40GB, not THAT bad...

Dangerous removal of the empeg? I've been removing my empeg from the car (or at least from the dock) multiple times every day for 3 years and I am still on the orginial hard drive and dock.

Maybe he means that the danger lies between his car and his house

Well, we know one person here where that trip is very dangerous.

Anyone want to start a buy Tony a Pelican case fund? We need to also get Patrick to build some sort of device to remove the empeg from the dock and put it in the case, then lock the case until it is back in the car.

Heh.

Thanks for the pelican suggestion, but the empeg bag is exactly small enough (and non-threatening-looking enough) so that I can take it a lot of places without hassle. Pelican case is too big, looks like a gun case, and as such would make me leave it in the car far too often for proper theft safety.

The courts do tend to side with the abused children in cases like this. Don't make us call child services for your poor little empeg...

I'm impressed! Whilst we specced as much of the empeg as possible to industrial range (-40C to +85C), there are still plenty of chips in there which are standard commercial range - like the CPU and RAM! ISTR that's something like 0C-55C.. these just weren't available in extended range versions.

That doesn't mean that there will be problems, just that the chips aren't specced for operation outside that range.

Hi all... Yes, I meant DANGERous... I've nearly dropped it a few times, and am often carrying other things. And I even have a "case logic" pull-out stereo bag (circa 1989 :-)

My biggest fear is droppage, nipple breakage, etc. Especially considering my driveway is often icy. So, being able to leave it in the car is a big bonus, for me at least. And theft isn't really an issue anymore, I think most thieves these days would think it WAS a pull-out from 1989...

Next project, wireless bridge.... (looking at some old 10mbit linksys gear, REAL cheap....)

I was wondering what the specs for the chips were. I know one case, a company I used to work for comissioned some LED signs from a local start-up company (this was the late 80s, it was newish tech still). We needed a custom size - 3". No one made 3" LED modules. So this company, on their dime, made a custom hand-fabbed sign, 3". Worked great, I saw it. They brought it in to town (they were an hour away) to show to our execs, and hopefully get the multi-hundred-thousand dollar contract. They came in the night before, and left it in the car.... Where it got down to -15F the night before.... When they came in to show it to the execs, it "sorta" worked... I knew, and they tried to explain, it just needed to warm up - cause they didnt use mil-spec components on a one-off. But the execs didnt care, and after 5 minutes, they were gone and the contract went to another company (luminator)...

So far -15F seems fine. I bet I'll see at least -20F this year. Plenty of winters we see lower than that.

Oh, and yes, thanks to everyone who had anything to do with the empeg... STILL head and shoulders above the others (although they are getting closer - but not for car use...)

Jeff

You really should have a sweater on in that kind of weather, you know.

And I thought the "instant" in the title referred to boot time. As if a colder empeg would boot faster.

Comes on the heals of me overheating my desktop CPU....
