For me, one of the big attractions of the TomTom series is that they run Linux and there is a nice set of 3rd-party addons to enhance the functionality. It took me an afternoon to write a small app that updates a web page with my current position.

Alas... TomTom has just sent out this:

Code:

We herewith inform you that TomTom has discontinued the
TomTom GO SDK. This means that TomTom will discontinue
the release of any new updates for the TomTom GO SDK and
we will keep supporting the current TomTom GO SDK until
its end of life for our existing customers. Due to this
the TomTom GO x10 serial cable has also been discontinued.

With kind regards,
The TomTom PRO support team

So no more user programmability

I wonder if they are planning a platform switch or something ?

Probably licensing issues with the map companies. They don't like it when their licensees give other people access to their maps in any way.

But the SDK doesn't really give any access to the map data anyway...

Sorry to dig up an oldish thread, but the SDK for the PPC was the most amusing thing ever.

From memory it cost a couple of hundred quid, but the actual SDK manual was available from the tomtom web site for free. (presumably to tempt prospective developers)

This meant that it literally took about 30 minutes to generate your own working SDK import library & header from scratch using nothing but the public API documentation, the tomtom binary, import viewer and the eVC compiler!

Rule number one. Strip symbols.

Indeed. Silly. But anyway, as you have done the hard work , would you mind posting it on opentom.org?

The most stupid thing of all is that while TomTom now stops the support of their SDK, Garmin now starts with a 3rd party developers program.

So I guess third party development is no so bad after all...
