My computer and wireless router are in my room, which is directly above the garage.

I remember seeing previous posts about wirelessly sending music to my car in the garage and that sounds like a lot of fun. I searched the board but couldn't find anything promising. I'd love to install a remote start and send music to the car whenever I want.

Am I dreaming?

This is actually beyond easy. I used a WET11 bridge.

The trick is, as the faq says, the standby timeout. This too is easy to bypass. When you turn off the car in the garage, the 'peg goes into standby for a bit before turnin' off. If you stab the top button, it goes back into "on" mode and will stay on forever. You can go inside and connect and synch, and tell empolde to "turn it off" when it's done.

As will your amplifier, at that point.

Anyone know if a car stereo amp will drain the car's battery much if it's just playing silence? My gut instinct is to say that it will tend to use some electricity, just not as much as it would if it were thumping Crystal Method.

My amp is hooked to the empeg's "on" line, but is powered by switched 12v, so it's off when the key is off.

Doesn't that make a gigantic speaker-damaging POP noise every time you start your car (or shut it off)?

Maybe your amp somehow protects against that, but that's what usually happens when you hook up an amplifier that way.

It doesn't make a sound. I never thought that it would. I think it's an Alpine amp... if you're interested I'll uncover it and see.

Huh, how big of an amp do you have? I always thought all amps needed a direct line to the battery. I assume your cars wiring harness hasn't melted yet though.

Tonyc has a great writeup of his system for wireless syncing. From my memory, he uses the facilities built into the empeg to wake up every so often and see if it needs to sync, and then shuts off. Copying what he did is about number 812 on my mental todo list.

This is getting added to my todo list for the install when __The Extender (tm)__ arrives

Mmm - how does that work then? Can it wake from a 'hard' off? I suppose it has an RTC but I didn't think it had a 'bios' wakeup timer... am I just missing something?

It does have one, but I can't remember what we did (anything?) about actually exposing it and making it usable. (Like, doesn't it need a custom c000.rom?)

Aaah, the joys of knowing that a search for "c000" would probably find it.

Tonyc uses it for exactly this purpose.

Excellent - especially for a boot (or trunk) mounted display-extended empeg...

Hey Tonyc, you said:

Yeah. I will probably be releasing the results of my work as some kind of software package, tentatively named "empsyncd."

Did you get a tuit?

Not yet, but for the record, it's only useful for someone who's syncing music with mp3tofid and rsync instead of emplode/jemplode and wants the empeg to initiate the rsync process when it comes into range of the home network. empsyncd just takes care of noticing that the key has been turned off, looks for your wireless connection, initiates the rsync if required, tells the empeg to wake up in an hour, and powers it down.

It sounds like the wireless solution folks here are talking about is one that still uses emplode, where the sync process is initiated from your PC after you walk into the house. For that setup, I don't think any extra software hacks are required, you just need to turn the car on, wait for the wireless bridge to join your WLAN, and sync away.

But, if there's genuine interest, I can try to clean things up and release something.

Sounds exactly like my scenario. Now, if you could only add SSH autentication when finding the network, to trigger opening the garage door...

me too
(Well, I'm using Jemplode for now but I'll be switching...)

Ditto. Still using JEmplode too, but I only update about once every six months 'cause it's so darn inconvenient. I've got a spare WET11 and I'd gladly make the switch to doing rsync if I could do wireless fairly well.
