Three days ago I've upgraded my 60GB hd with a new 120GB one, I've formatted the new one, reinstalled alpha11+the last hijack and transferred all the fids from the old HD as shown in the f.a.q.. Everything worked well for three days, the empeg worked at home and in car, everything perfect.

Today I've powered up the empeg and it freezed with the display showing this popup:

0000.3 hda: err: stat_err

First of all I've thought at HD failure so I've replaced the new 120GB disk with the old 60GB one but I've exactly the same problem.

this is the serial log:

I've just had problems with IDE years ago, because of this Rob repaired my empeg 2 times, the last one he changed the IDE cable with a brand new one and resoldered/glued the board connector. I've triple checked everything, I've reinstalled 2.0, 3a11 and various hijack versions but nothing, I really don't know what to do :/

Thanks for any help or support! :'/

There's definitely something wrong with the hardware here -- the SMC ethernet chip is not being detected, plus the hard drive data is getting corrupted.

Could be a bad cable, bad header, bad SMC chip, or other possibliities.

Cheers

Mmm.. since the D7 line appears to be stuck high, I'm leaning towards a faulty SMC ethernet chip as the culprit now. But it does require some hardware debugging to make sure of that -- soldering and lifting pins and such.

Cheers

Thank you very much for the reply Mark, it's always a pleasure to have someone to talk to in this hard cases.
I've just asked Schofiel for (the third) repair but still no answer, if he doesn't have time, would you please consider to give it a look? I'm quite good with solderings of normal components and chips but i can't do SMD, do you think I can give it a try?
In the end, do you have an idea of the cause of this failure? Does the HD upgrade could be the problem? Thanks.

Mmm.. cancel that thought. Actually, data bit D1 is very clearly stuck low, and I'm not sure about the rest of the bits.

Mmmm..

Yes, I can look at it, eventually. It could take a month or two, or just an evening, depending very much upon my up-to-the-minute schedule and how inspired I feel about it on any given day.

Try Rob Schofiel first, and use email to arrange things with me after that.

I don't know what causes things like this to fail. The usual sources of random bit failures in electronics are (1) dirty power (under/over voltage, spikes, noise, etc), and (2) ESD (electro-static discharge) damage from mishandling things. The empeg is darned near tough as nails much of the time, but it's not immune to such problems either.

Cheers
