So I'm driving home from Vegas tonight and right before getting to my hotel in southern Utah my empeg got this error. Removed/reinserted and it would come up again at the loading visuals point. I tried the force DC, but it had the same results. It just reboots over and over.

I still have a 4 hour drive ahead of me, so if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. I have a laptop (vista) with me, a power adapter, and a crossover cable.

When all else fails, the quick fix is usually:

boot and connect via serial, hit control^C to kill player.

Then do: player -i
wait a few seconds, hit Control^C to kill it again,
and then type exit and disconnect the serial.

You may lose EQ settings and other stuff, but this sledgehammer normally recovers from the worst.

Any ideas without a serial cable?

Oh.. your crossover cable must be ethernet then, not serial.

Sorry.

You can try the Kill/Restart Player option (or whatever I named it) from the Hijack menu -- it tries to be a bit more clever about things than the basic error handling is.

Yeah, I should have specified crossover ethernet.

Using the Reboot Player option had the same result, as did trying different force AC/DC modes, and the restore DC/Car Visuals option.

I have seen an error similar to this a couple times, but have found no exact way to reproduce it: 0000.2 hda: err:irq ___ (I didn't get the whole thing).

If it's a dud track I've had some success with simply pressing next (right) very quickly while it's booting and can usually get it to skip the track before it crashes...

I've usually been able to do that too, but here it seems like it crashes before I am able to get to that point. Of course it's probably right there that it crashes. The last status message it gives is Loading Visuals, which I thought the restore visuals thing was for (to get around a bad track).

Shoot. Looks like I've been a slacker and missed the hijack I need. v477 does exactly what I need... just the next revision of what I have. Got that from a search for +bad +track. I was thinking Mark was referring to the restore visuals, which I see is altogether different.

Looks like I'll have no tunes until I get home. Well I'll listen to some movies playing off my laptop. Pity though I won't be able to pipe the audio over the aux in of the empeg.

You should be able to upgrade hijack over the ethernet cable, if your player is configured with a static IP address.

Just use an FTP client to transfer the Hijack zImage file into /proc/empeg_kernel, and then wait an extra 30 seconds after it completes before rebooting the player.

Unfortunately I use DHCP at home and work, I'll have to change that when I get home as well to avoid situations like this again.

Well the nice thing is I'm getting a better idea of everything to bring for future road trips. crazy

Thanks for your help Mark!

This means there is a more general problem with the player's hard disk, or the player's connection to the hard disk.

The other suggestions in this thread seem to indicate that you have a bad track that you need to skip. Based on the above error message, I think you have a bigger problem than that.

I think you are right. I've reinstalled 3.0A11, and hijack v488. Tried Marks instructions above, and still can't get the player software to start up correctly.

Nothing wrong with the IDE data test -- it passed in the end, and that's the only thing that matters in that case.

When I get home tonight I'll throw a different drive in there and see if I have the same problem.

Well I finally got around to putting a different drive in there. It was already built, and even had music on there. Everything worked fine, so my guess is a hard drive failure. At least I only have 50GB of music to re-sync! wink And as long as I have it apart I'm going to fix that temp sensor. Thanks again everyone!

Ok, so for the past week I have been running with a new primary hard drive (hda), and the same secondary drive(hdb).

With this config I would occasionally see a stat_timo error on hdb. (I did see this with my original config on both hda and hdb)

So last night I blew away hdb with DBAN, then ran SpinRite to check for disk errors. I built the old hdb as hda (single drive conf), then loaded the player software. I synced a bunch of music overnight for my drive in to work today.

With the single drive (again originally hdb when everything first failed) I started getting the same stat_timo messages. Now at work I'm getting "No hard disk found..."

So I guess it comes down to this, is there anything that could have caused both hard drives to fail simultaneously like that while I was driving (not at startup or shutdown)? Would the same thing happen again to new hard drives?

Yes, and yes.

The NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF HARD DISK PROBLEMS in the Empeg
is the IDE HEADER ON THE MAINBOARD.

(sometimes I get weary of reminding people of this).

Most likely, one or more pins from the hard drive header (connector) on the mainboard has lifted from its inadequate factory solder job.

It bounces around, sometimes making contact, sometimes not. Heat can make a difference, as can simply lifting the empeg by its handle.

It needs to be inspected and resoldered down flat again, by somebody competent at soldering without destroying the motherboard pads/traces.

Cheers

Could this be caused by a bad cable?

I've been wondering that as well. I've been using an extended cable from Eutronix for the last couple years. I'll inspect both the headers and cable under my magnifying lamp, but last week when I looked at the IDE header everything looked good. But that was with the system board still in the metalwork. I'll also give the original cable a try.

Well Mark, I appreciate your reminding me to check the IDE header. I had visually looked it over last week, but missed one bad connection. I verified it with a continuity test on my multimeter tonight. I touched it and the one next to it up, and fingers crossed everything is perfect again.

Sometimes you just need to be told to look again, ya know.

Now comes the fun task of trying to remember what I had in my config.ini. smile

Thanks again! I know my empeg would have been dead long ago if it wasn't for the people here.

Yeah, it's the only thing that could make *two* drives flaky.

Hi All,

After many years of solid service my player now has the same issue, it reboots repeatedly with a segfault/sigkill error. I tried skipping forward during this boot loop but this does not change the error.

I connected via serial and upgraded hijack - same problem
I swapped the drive to that of my other empeg - no problem
I swapped IDE cables between players - the problem follows the drive itself

From this I presume that I have a drive problem, either physical or some corruption?

I connected via serial but cannot interrupt the player starting with either repeated or continual pressing of either CTRL-C or q.

I have another drive in a drawer at the office which I will try to config for the empeg and then I suppose connect both with the new one as master and copy all the FIDs across. Is this the best course of action?

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to fix this drive in another way, given the above?

Thanks in advance.
