Has anyone else had problems uploading kernels to Mk1 players? I've been trying Tony's download.exe, but keep getting the error:
starting erase [Failed to get echo-back on erase command.
Error: erasepage(20000) got code 1
Has anyone else seen this?
TIA,
Jason

Well, I haven't done all that many kernel down(up?)loads and it's been a while
since the last one, but on those I've done I've had no problems...

Greetings!
It sounds like the communication port is not communicating, and that it is erroring early in the process (need to erase first)... A few things to test...
Do you have the correct cable?
Are you using the correct version of the download program for your computer's serial port?
Do you have the speed set correctly?
You might want to test your serial communication with Hyperterm first, then download after disconnecting / exiting Hyperterm.
Are you loading the correct Mk1 kernel to the Mk1?

Odd. I've had a look at the source code. When this happens, it's already communicated a little bit with the player and it's satisfied with the version number and everything. It's told it to lock a page in memory and now it's gonna erase that page.
Okay, things to try:
1) Can you perform a software upgrade on the player using the empeg utility for this purpose? Can you successfully apply an ".upgrade" file? That's gotta work first.
2) Is your COM port sharing an IRQ with another device? For instance, do you have the empeg plugged into COM1, but your modem or mouse is on COM3?
3) Are you giving it the download.exe the command-line parameters?
4) Download.EXE is an old version. Instead, snag my logo editor from my home page (click on my name below), and use it to install your logo. See if that works.
5) Have you tried it on another computer yet? ___________

Yes, I can apply the ".upgrade" fine. Nothing wrong with the port settings, as I can also upload logos with logoedit 1.4.
I tried it on my laptop, and it got through the erasing and then errored with "(1c000) got code 6" during the programming.
Thanks for any help,
Jason

I don't understand, then. Why are you using "download.exe" instead of the newer "upload.exe" that's included with logoedit 1.4? If logoedit works, then upload.exe works. Details of how to use it are in the readme.txt file...

Yeah, sorry. My original post should have said "upload.exe".

Well, then, I don't understand. You say that you're able to use the logo editor to send logos to the empeg, but you get an error message when you do it from the command line? What are you trying to send? I don't get it. ___________

No, I'm using the Kernel flash utility from logoedit 1.4 to upload a kernel. I have not tried the program from the command line.

So it'll send a logo no problem, but it won't send a kernel? That's very strange!
Are you sure the kernel file itself is a good file? ___________

Tony,
has this been resolved? I am trying to get Kit's time display running, and I am getting this from your Upload.exe:
found empeg unit: entering program mode
manufacturer=0089, product=88c1
waiting for prompt
starting erase [Failed to get echo-back on erase command.
Error: erasepage(10000) got code 1
Press the Enter key to continue.
after which (upon reboot) the player works, i.e. is not hosed.
Any ideas?
Update: If sending directly from logo editor, I am getting 'Error number 53 occured in the Kernel routine'.

No, it hasn't been resolved to my knowledge. Have you tried it on different computers to rule out a possible problem with the serial port? ___________

Phew, fast as ever!
No, I haven't tried on other computers, but this port has been used recently for regular upgrade to 1.02 without a problem.
I tried again from logoedit, and this time, instead of error 53, I get MS-DOS window with Upload, with the same 'erasepage' message.
Thanks!

Wait a minute.
Error 53?
That's a "File Not Found".
what is the filename you're trying to upload? ___________

I don't know how I managed to get 'file not found' at first two logoedit tries, I could swear I was using 'browse' option. Anyway, it is gone now, and I get regular MS-DOS window with regular Upload error message.
BTW, I tried standard MS remedies, like rebooting the PC. Did no good. If I try to send logos, I get the same error (only the address is different).

Moving to a different computer has been the only way I could get upload.exe to send a kernel. It's wierd, because Logoedit can send logos, and I can terminal in and use emplode from that machine(Win98, Celeron ~300), but I always get the ErasePage error when I try to upload a kernel. No biggie, as I have access to a couple other machines at work.

A thought:
Could there be another driver, another device or something sharing the serial port?
Also, could there be some kind of issue with flow control - are you using the cable that came with it, or your own? As a test, you might want to use Hyperterm (or another terminal emulator) to try and send a large file to some temp space on the empeg.
Lastly, check your serial port configuration to see if you are forcing any settings in your Windows environment that is "different" from what your DOS shell is running. If I remember correctly, LogoEdit, the kernel upgrade utility and most terminal emulators all use the Windows drivers for the serial port. If you are using a DOS based utility, its configuration may be coming from the command window setup. Check to see if you have any strange settings for configuring the com port through your autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, etc. Perhaps a DOS based terminal emulator might also show the problem...

Hyperterminal works OK, empeg's upgrade utility also. When something else is using the port (e.g. when I forget to shut down Hyperterminal or Palm sync utility) the error message is different, and correctly indicates port access problem. In my situation Upload does read something from empeg before giving up.
I guess I'll have to try another machine.
Thanks!
