I have been getting lots of MP3s ripped using my laptop and quite a few of them are turning up as invalid mp3 on the empeg but i can't find anything wrong with them and they are playing fine on my house machine and my laptop. they were made using Realplayer which has worked pretty much okay on other machines.

I have uploaded one MP3 to my yahoo briefcase my yahoo idenity is Thinfourth and you can find my briefcase there hopefully

Could some one please try and get the file and see if they can work out what is going wrong or if it works on their empeg.

In the mean time i shall see if i can find somewhere else to stick it that is more accessable

Open the files with MP3Trim and have it check them out for you. It'll tell you what's wrong with them.

And use a better ripper/encoder package than RealPlayer, please.

Exact Audio Copy is the best ripper I've found so far. It's free.

As far as encoding, I'm currently using lame on Windows.

However, neither of these are easy to use. AudioCatalyst used to be cheap and easy, but Real bought it and screwed it up.

You're right. I just downloaded that Pipe Dreams from your Yahoo account and it checks out fine. Also, when I sent it to my Empeg and played it, it worked fine and I got no error messages. (Note that I'm running a 1.03 alpha, but I don't think that matters, the point is that the file appears to be fine.)

Perhaps there's some kind of a problem with your player?

Much strangeness will try encoding on my desktop machine and see if it spits out the dummy on the same track I am running 1.02 with displayserver in the background ( still think it is cool frank)

Don't think the empeg is duff as it has been perfect since i got it it has only spat the dummy out on one very corrupted track before but about half the mp3s created by this latop spit out the dummy.

I shall try a few head scratchs and goof around and see if i can change things

Musicmatch is free and easy to use.... I rip and encode at 160kps on my notebook and at home with no problems...

i downloaded free version of musicmatch not quite as idiot proof as real and it works on my machine.

Two gripes with it though it doesn't save the tracks in track order and i don't think it will get a batch of cd titles of the internet at once it is just on cd at a time where as real will get information for aload of cds you have used offline.

Unless someone can tell me otherwise

The tracks can be saved in order.. You have to set the outputted filename to be tracknumber_tracktitle. It is really quite flexible. Then, when you view the folder that the tracks are outputted to, they will be in alpha order. You can even change the "_" to a diferant symbol. Here is how to have the track number first:

Options>Settings... Then click on the "Recorder" tab. Click on the "Songs Directory" button. Now you can select where you want the mp3's to be put. I pick the desktop so that I can check out the files before fileing them away. Be sure to check "Track Number" under "Name Song using". The rest should be pretty easy to figure out...

Let me know if you have any other questions.. I've been using MusicMatch for about 6 months now...
