I would like to recover the mp3s from the hd of the empeg but I can't do it through the player right now, there's a way to do it? I'm trying to mount the data (big) partition in windows with the sysinternals tool but while I can see data in the other partitions, the big one seems empty. I'm also trying to do it with linux but because I'm using a usb-to-ide adapter I'm having problems also with it. I don't care about the filenames, I'll be happy to recover the songs also without filenames. thank you very much.

The files are stored on the player like this.

If you've run the third party "fidsift" program on the drive, then it will be just like described at the link above, but the files will also be sifted into a tree of subfolders with similar names.

If you aren't seeing anything in those locations, then your mounting tool isn't working properly or there's something wrong with the drive itself.

Also, I hope the files were properly tagged before you sent them to the player. Otherwise it's going to take you forever to get them renamed properly. If they were tagged right to begin with, then you just need to run a tags-to-filenames pass on them with MP3 Tag Studio and you're done.

Thank you for the fast reply Tony, it will be ok for me to recover the FIDs, my problem actually is I can't mount the data partitions of the the empeg disks (I've 3 empeg formatted disks with some songs inside) but it seems very strange because I can see the other partitions. I'm using "DiskInternals Linux Reader" from Sysinternals. What can I try? Thanks.

I'm trying with damn small linux now and when I try to mount the big partition it says "mount: relocation error: mount: undefined symbol: blkid_known_fstype", if I specify -t ext2 or ext3 it says wrong fs type, "file -s /dev/sda4" says: "/dev/sda4: data" Any idea?

# Boot a Linux system, connect the hard drive.
# Open up a terminal (or "shell") window.
# Do this:

sudo bash
mkdir /t
mount /dev/sda4 /t -oro
ls /t

Sounds like a screw-up with that build of mount -- it can't find the libraries it was expecting to. In other words, try a different version of DSL, or another Linux altogether such as Knoppix.
