My audio amplifier has an inadequate number of optical digital audio inputs to match the number of pieces of equipment that I want to have playing in 5.1 surround sound.

I'd like to overload one of the inputs and have the playstation 2 and the playstation 3 both go into that same input. Since I won't be playing the two game consoles at the same time, it seems to me that I should be able to just Y the two optical audio cables into the one input and they should work. Would they?

Would something like this do what I want? Anyone know if this idea will work?

Monoprice has the same (looking) one for cheaper. The customer reviews indicate that it will work for your intended use even though their description says otherwise.

Thank you very much for this information! Parts ordered. And especially thank you for the information about Monoprice, because that was a web site whose existence I had forgotten about. I have made a special note to myself so that I won't forget about them again.

Should be just fine as long as the outputs of the PS2 and PS3 actually turn off in standby mode. Pretty easy to tell - just look in the socket and see if you can see a light whilst in standby. Otherwise use the switch as recommended for a dollar more:

Ah right! Thanks for that advice about checking to see if the outputs go off.

I saw that three way switch before, but I was looking for a hands-free solution.
