Anyone have a recommendation for a program to take screen shots in windows ?

The best thing would be if I could tell it a window to watch and it would do a grab every time that window changes.

This would be grabbing from a web browser.

I just did about 100 slides using alt + print screen

I've been using Wink to do some screencasts lately, and it works by taking a bunch of screenshots. You might want to see if you can use it to export the screenshots instead of compiling them into a Flash presentation.

I'm happy with Snagit. It may be outdated now (we have an old version)

Purrint can auto save every X seconds to bmp, png, jpg or gif. Click on the cat to see the auto save option.

Can you make purrint only capture one window ? For me it is just grabbing the whole screen.

Irfanview seems to work it just grabs every xxx seconds as well. Something that just does a grab when the window changes would be the best but I don't think it exists.

Did you look at Wink? It's designed for exactly that, except it compiles the screenshots into a screencast. It can be limited to a window, or even part of a window; it takes screenshots upon changes (well, on mouse and keyboard events), and when it fails, you can take one manually by pressing a single key.

I feel certain that there's a way to get the screenshots out of it; it has the option to save as PDF instead of as Flash, so it seems reasonable that it can save a series of image files, too.

Yep:
Quote:
# Input formats: Capture screenshots from your PC, or use images in BMP/JPG/PNG/TIFF/GIF formats.
# Output formats: Macromedia Flash, Standalone EXE, PDF, PostScript, HTML or any of the above image formats. Use Flash/html for the web, EXE for distributing to PC users and PDF for printable manuals.

I don't see a way to auto screenshot just a window with Purrint. I know that Alt+Print Screen will take a screenshot of just the active window and Purrint will auto save to numbered files.

Seems like Snagit (already recommended) will do what you need, at least as far as grabbing a window, including contents of a web page that are not visible in the window frame if you so choose. It will allow you to set timers, but I'm not sure about triggers on window updates.

The application looks fairly up to date on the developer's site, but I don't have any experience running it myself. I just happened to come across it earlier in the week when looking at the company's screen casting software, Camtasia.

I've noticed some screenshots / pictures when the poster has used a product to give a torn paper look to the edge of the image. I can't seem to find a sample easily at the moment. But it is useful IMO for when the screenshot is of only part of the screen and you want to indicate that it is part of a bigger picture, but that the rest of the picture isn't relevant to the topic been discussed.

I will try Wink I didn't because I want a pdf or jpegs I can make a pdf. I am trying to do this so I can take the flash online training my work does and have a copy I can use offline so Wink sounded backwards if it only made a flash.

I can set the presentation to automatically change slides so a timer based one would work but I need to stop it when the presentation is over or I end up with a ton of same screen shot. Not really that big of a deal but one that only takes a shot when the window changes would be better.

I didn't try Snagit yet because why not try the free stuff first I guess smile

If you set Wink to trigger on mouse does it do one grab ? When I do it takes three grabs with each mouse click.

I does let you export to a pdf too yay smile .

Wouldn't it be easier (for this specific task) to find some tool that let you output the frames of the flash out to individual files?

I just did a very quick search and this was the first result.

http://www.bytescout.com/moviesextractorscout_lite.html

It can pull flash animations from web sites, if you need that first. It can also save out frames from an animation as JPG as well as other formats.

This is an example of what I was referring to in my previous post:

I think one of the programs I tried from this thread did this. I can't remember which one but I will check when I get home. (in the Black Hills now will get home Friday)
