I had an ethernet connection working in the past, but now, with the same cable and computer..its not working. I can't figure it out. Hopefully someone can help. I'm just trying to connect directly to my PC using a cross-connect cable. Thus, there is no gateway. What should I enter for the gateway value on both the PC and the Empeg?

For now I have them set as follows:

PC: 192.168.0.50
255.255.255.0 (mask)

Empeg: 192.168.0.51
255.255.255.0 (mask)

But emplode doesn't see it, regardless of whether I use broadcast or try to tell it to look for the specific address I have assigned to the Empeg.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

-steve

where is teh dhcp server coming from, or where is teh comain controller.. sice you are using PIPA i would hazard a guess it is dhcp and not finding a dhcp server.. check all physical connection, router, etc.. and then try to ping the empeg on that address.. let us know what you find.

There is no DHCP server involved, I am not using DHCP. Additionally, neither the Computer or the Empeg are on any kind of network. They are connected to each other via a single cross-connect cable (as implied in the manual is possible). I know its possible because I did it before. I'm not sure why it won't work today.

Check for the simplest things first: Cable problems, jack problems, etc.

For instance, if anyone ever accidentally plugged a regular telephone wire into the ethernet jack of either the PC or the Empeg, then two of the eight pins are bent and it will only work intermittently.

Check your device manager in Windows and look for little yellow boo-boo icons (official microsoft name).

Do you get link lights on both devices?

Did you upgrade the Mark2 empeg with a Mark1 .upgrade file? That'll kill ethernet, too.

yes yes...I already checked for all those things of course. What about the gateway value? Nobody has answered that question? I do have green lights on the ethernet adapater...which means its linking up. The cable is fine. The adapters are fine (on the computer anyway, who knows about the Empeg...but it worked before so...

What should be the value for gateway when using cross-connect cable?

You should not be using a 0 (zero) value in your ethernet addressing scheme.

If you are using a point-point connection, you do not need a gateway setting since there is no exit point from your subnet. If you are forced to set this value, then you an either set it to all zeros or your own NIC IP address.

From what I've picked up in my limited network expirience, the gateway value is not important here as you are only dealing with one network (those 2 computers). A gateway value is the IP of a computer on your network that is also connected to another network, so that that computer is essentially your computer's "gateway" to the other network. Commonly a gateway is important for you to enter in some internet connections where your computer is connected to a computer at your ISP, which is a gateway to the net. As to your empeg, that doesn't really help you much. Try pinging the empeg "ping 192.168.0.51" and seeing if you get a response, then you at least know it the ethernet or some software issue is at fault. Good god it's 4:19 AM over here, what the hell am I doing?

Check for a working TCP/IP configuration on your computer. I had to reinstall Windows (98) completely, when winipcfg wasn't working. If properly configured, try to ping the empeg.
You can leave the gateway address empty, or enter the same IP address as the empeg's.
Although you may think the connection is okay, since the link leds are on, be absolutely sure the cable is ok as well as the pins not been bent.

Actually, you can use a zero in your addressing scheme, I am using it quite successfuly on my network at home. Your addresses are fine. Can you ping the empeg?

Actually, it kinda sounds like the empeg has forgotten its ip adress. If you can't ping it, try hooking up the serial cable and checking that its ethernet settings are still correct.

You can use it but you shouldn't. Read the RFC for NAT and the test address range 192.168.X.X that he's using.

Got the RFC number handy, Rob?

Roger - not necessarily speaking for empeg

A - the computer workes fine when plugged into my home network.

B - pinging the empeg brings back no response.

C - I have tried using Emplode with the USB interface several times to check/correct the Network settings on the Empeg.

Any other suggestions?

Do you by chance have the developer player on there? If so, can you hook up a serial cable, get to a command prompt, and type in "ifconfig". This command shoudl report back the ip's and interface configurations, and may show a problem.

(If it says command not found for ifconfig, then it may not be in the standard load and that idea is shot. I can't remember if it was in the base developer player or not).

RFC 1918 is the RFC in question that describes the privrate address space, but it doesn't describe or deal with CIDR, that's another RFC altogether (RFC1519 if anyone cares :)

As for 0's in IP address, there are two thing to avoid in IP addresses, that it all zeros or all ones, in either the host or the network address.

192.168.128.0 is invalid because it has all 0's in the host part (198.168.128 is the network, .0 is the host in a /24 (class C) space)
192.168.0.128 is valid because there is not all 0's or all 1's in either the network (192.168.0) or the host (.128).

Forgive me for the overly long and techinical explination, I've been doing large scale IP backbone stuff for 7 years now, so I just wanted to clear it up :)

What's wrong with all 1's in the host part, e.g. 192.168.0.1? I've used that in several networks w/o problems.

In these times, when IP adresses are scarce, you'll try anything to free up some IP-adresses, so we use 255.255.252.0 netmasks, which results in the IP-address x.x.255.0 in one of the IP-ranges
This is a B-class though...
