I am trying to install a new hard drive into my empeg because the system says NO HARD DISK FOUND with the original drive.

However when I am applying the builder upgrade it gets to SELECTING PUMP and eventually comes back with a bad pump response.

I have viewed the bad pump FAQ, checked the cable connections and also tried 3 different hard drives.

Below is the log of what happens when I plug up the drive. Any ideas?

I have tried a 10GB, 30GB, and an 80GB drive.

Let's see. The FAQ entry for pump errors lists a several possible causes:

1. Corrupted ".upgrade" file.

Which upgrade file are you using?

2. Serial port/cable problems.

Your boot log looks fine so I'm guessing you have a working serial cable with which to retrieve that boot log. However, it doesn't completely rule out an intermittent serial cable problem, or perhaps a problem with sending data but not a problem receiving it.

3. Bad disk drive.

You have ruled that out by trying three disk drives.

4. Other hard disk troubles.

Aha, now here's the likely culprit. You say you checked the cable connections, but how certain are you that the IDE header is good and isn't getting the cracking joints problem? Or perhaps theres a problem with the drive interface electronics. I'm guessing it's one of those. This theory is supported by three pieces of information:

- You'd had NO HARD DISK FOUND errors to begin with.
- You have the same trouble no matter which disk you plug in.
- Your boot log indicates a bitwise error in its IDE tests:
