So the thread about how electric blankets shut off made me think one would be a good gift for my wife who is cold all the time. The thermostat is set to 70 and she's still cold.

I have never used or looked at these things before so can anyone recommend a one for just using on the couch.

I read something about there being low voltage ones which sounds like a good idea but it appears only one kind (softheat) does it this way. Being covered with high voltage wires sounds scary I would guess they all have GFIC or some kind but the thought of spilling a drink on it is scary.

My daughter refuses to sleep under her sheets. For colder nights, we put an electric blanket *under* her sheets, which seemed to do a reasonable job at the time. We wouldn't try that today as we're working on weaning her off diapers at night...

Is this for the bed or for the couch?

If it's for the couch, you may think I'm nuts (and probably justified), but instead of an electric blanket I highly recommend the Slanket.

My wife is also cold all the time, and so was my dad. We got him a Slanket last Christmas and he used it all the time. This year someone at work bought one for my wife and she loves it. Sometimes it's even too warm for her, so an electric blanket is unnecessary (and I got her one last year).

To be perfectly clear: I am not talking about a Snuggie. The Snuggie is cheap and feels like it. You can pick one up at your local grocery store or CVS, and it fits in a box about one cubic foot. The Slanket, which was first to market but not as well advertised, comes in a large plastic zippered bag, as you'd see holding a quilt or comforter at your local department store. It must be about 5 times the volume of the Snuggie.

Yes, we are very serious in our home about the Slanket. Very serious indeed. After all, it's the product of choice for Liz Lemon and her night cheese.

An eletric blanket in Texas? Have you tried a Sleep Sack for her? The cotton ones might be cool enough (ie not too warm) for chilly Texas nights.

I highly recommend putting your bathrobe on backwards. Or maybe just wear a sweater.

That said, the Slanket does seem to be considered the best of the not-insanely-priced dweebifiers.

And most importantly, WTF?

That was hilarious. Of course I admit that I cannot defend this purchase. Do I get any credit for not wanting to use it myself? At least we didn't pay for it, right? smile

I will say that the "put your robe on backwards" doesn't quite accurately describe the Slanket. I don't know about your wife, but my wife's bathrobe only comes down to mid-calf. [edit: and I think the article you linked to sufficiently covers that issue. Did you get that far down?]

Yeah, nuts. Where's your hat Gandalf? wink

I hope that blanket is for private use only. Since it's not an invisibility cloak, others can still see you wrestle the hobbit underneath it. But it's definitely magic. +10 resistance to the opposite sex.

I was looking for one for the couch. I just got one from Target I looked at a couple places and they look about the same. You can definitely feel the wires in them I don't know how big of a deal that is though.

Weird. Super weird. How did I not see Bitt's post when I followed up? I was even using the quick reply box. Strange that I did see Tony's. Maybe I should have gone for the Rick-role instead. wink

I haven't personally seen an electric blanket in which you couldn't feel the wires.

Well supposedly there are some low voltage ones that have very small wires that are less noticeable. As far as I can tell there is only one brand that does it that way and they were not at any of the stores I went to so....
