I want to make sure "The five year old" isn't able to crank up the headphone volume when playing his computer games.

So I need some kind of way to limit the top volume which the system will generate.

If he's not clever enough to go digging in the system settings, you could turn the volume down using the volume icon in the task bar, then hide the icon. (Hiding the icon is in the task bar settings.)

If he's clever enough to go digging in the system settings, then he's probably clever enough to disable any software you might install. In that case, your only solution is hardware modification: add a resistor either to the headphones or to the jack.

You just need to remove the volume control as Tony said and if neccessary, give the five year old his own account. After the volume control access is removed, just remove access to entire control panel under that account- no need to do hardware modifications.

The keyboard has volume buttons.

edit: I'm not inclined to swap the keyboard.

Reread this. Resistor on the headphone jack would work fine. That jack is connected to the main board via a header. So adding a resistor in parallel would be pretty easy.

Truly, I was hoping someone knew of a group policy setting that could be set as admin.

Somebody filed a patent for the process of obtaining the max volume a user desires, then automatically resetting the volume down to that limit, when an attempt is made to set it above the desired limit. Least that's my read of it.

Hmm. Sounds very much like the "whole hotel volume cap" that Roger implemented on the Rio Receiver for the Ministry Of Sound hotel in Ibiza smile

It was great, just drag a slider on the server and instant silence! No idea if they actually used it though - most likely they did then forgot to turn it up again. The system used the built-in Rio Receiver amp + passive speakers so was hard to bypass...

Use Microsoft's remapkey.exe to remap the volume keys to something like a shift key.

Which will last until said 5 year old sees Glenn use the shift key. Kids are amazingly quick learners, as my 2.5 year old reminds me every day.

Yes I know they can be quite clever wink but what I meant was to remap the volume keys so that they duplicate the shift key function. He would lose the volume control function on that keyboard until it is remapped again. I've not used this program so I don't know for sure it would work like this but it seems likely.
