So I finally went down to one of those big box stores. I knew they had the pigtails and adaptors that would let me do a mediocre install. While there, I was foolish enough to ask if there was an additional kit available to provide support at the back of a DIN style head unit. Chrysler still insists on those oversize head units.
When the guy asked what it was I was installing, I admitted that it was out in the trunk of the car. He asked me to fetch it in. When he saw that it was a slide out design. He proclaimed, "That's really an old unit you have there." That should have been a tip-off. Gamely, I tried to let him know what it was in my hands. (60gig model Empeg) The next response was that they had new personal portables with more storage than that, in a smaller format, like a stick of gum.
So, another store with idiots for salesmen bites the dust.
The real message though is that pullouts aren't stylish. It seems the big car audio companies have done a good job convincing the masses that faceplates are in. The average salesman (I'd say "less than" in this case, as I didn't buy the install kit.) isn't going to try selling pullouts anymore.
Something to keep in mind if there is a Mk III in the works.
