But why not use a std outdoor electrical box with an rj45 wall plate inside.

MK make such a thing. (That's a modular enclosure that you then get a Cat5e insert for.)

Not cheap though, i.e. possibly less cheap than wifi-enabling whatever you were going to plug into it...

Yeah, I've never used wireless so no idea how well it works through walls etc. I'm, guessing our walls will be pretty transparent (timber frame; recycled newspaper insulation with OSB one side and wood fibre the other) but I have no real idea.

You're probably right, and I've found something that does this now. But I should really go wireless (as above) just have no experience of it, always set up home and work networks as fully hard wired.

An outdoor Cat 6 jack would make it much more obvious when your neighbor is stealing your Internet connection.
