My niece having just bought her first house. Went, with my Mom, to buy a new refrigerator. Looking to make the most of her money, they went to the scratch and dent place. Where they found the machine of their dreams. A big side by side unit with ice and water out the front. The only dents, were a couple of small ones near the top of the refrigerator door.

They say to each other, "No problem we will hide the dents with refrigerator magnets."

The unit was delivered, installed, and it was time to anoint it with its beautifying magnets. They were most shocked to find the magnets falling to the floor at their feet.

Yes, they had bought a stainless steel refrigerator.

I'm sure they won't notice the dents after a while. I never thought about magnets not sticking to stainless steel that would be annoying I like refrigerator magnets.

The electromagnetic properties of double sided tape may help the magnets to stick.

My three year old had a blue magnet that she would sick to the refrigerator and stove.

She came to the conclusion that blue things stick to white things

I have a stainless refrigerator and the manufacturer had the foresight to put some sort of ferromagnetic panel underneath part of the door.

Depending on the grade of stainless steel some magnets will stick…..

I recently had a stainless steel chimney installed and when they arrived I did the magnet test and sure enough it was the lower grade. I had them take it back and get the better grade.

On the one hand, I was a bit miffed that our snazzy stainless fridge didn't support magnets. On the other hand, it was the excuse I'd always wanted to convert a wide wall to having a floor-to-ceiling whiteboard of the ceramic-coated steel variety. That board is now thoroughly covered with magnets and doodles and such.

I believe this is what we bought. The maximum size they offer is 4x12 feet. They have a list of standard sizes, and they can also cut it shorter before shipping it to you. What they can't do are any sort of punchouts, like where you might want to have a light switch or power outlet.

The whiteboard came with sticky goo on the bottom. Peel off a plastic sheet and press to the wall. This probably works if your wall is raw sheetrock, but it unpeeled from our painted wall. Solution? Heavy duty glue. The guys who did this for me went an extra level and rigged up cross-bracing with wood 2x4's to keep it flush while the glue was curing.

And yes, my daughter seriously digs it. We have an eraser and pens with magnets built-in, so they just stick the board when we're not using them.

All my appliances, range hood and much of the BBQ are stainless and I have a custom-cut stainless panel as a backsplash behind the range. The only non-magnet-attracting items are the Bosch range and the backsplash.

Dishwasher and fridge are Fisher Paykel with mild-medium magnetic attraction and the range hood is Zephyr with stronger attraction. The tables and door on the Napoleon BBQ are very much attracted to magnets.
