I don't own an Empeg, but a seriously considering buying one now my Credit Card balance is back to zero.

I keep seeing references to boot time and I know the Empeg is essentailly a computer running Linux. What is a typical boot time for the Empeg, and if this varies, what affects it ?

Just timed mine - 10 seconds from power on to fully loaded player application. That's with about 10GB of music loaded, if you have a lot more that'll probably add another second or two. Single-drive empegs usually take another few seconds to wait for a non-existent second drive (there's a kernel patch that avoids the extra wait).

Not bad for a Linux computer, eh?

I am getting 10 seconds as well with a single 10GB drive. It's about half-way filled but I am not sure if that makes any difference. However, when keeping the unit in standby, it's back up almost instantly.

So with Standby, the unit is still booted. So its only when you first start up the car that it takes 10 seconds ?

Thats about the time it takes to reverse off my driveway :-)

Yea you dont really notice it. My sony minidisc head unit used to take almost as long to start playing a CD from the changer on startup.

It only takes that long when you take it out of the car and put it back into the car sled before starting to drive.

If you leave it in the car, the unit is fed a small amount of power to keep the memory alive, that means instant boot-up then.

Anyway, the boot-up time when I put it back into the sled after having had the unit with me is not bad at all, getting setup and comfortable in the car usually takes longer. :)

So if you're navigating out of your drive-way... that'll surely be enough time. :)

24 GB Empeg..... about 20 GB Music stored. Boot time: 11 seconds. I think this depends a little on the time the harddrive need to spin up. Anyway i never felt annoyed because of long boot times. In Practice it is really fast enough completely loaded after turning on your engine....

Worst case??? - 96GB Empeg, 82GB music, unplugged and started in the home configuration with power brick: 15 seconds.

MK2a took 10 seconds it has 2 drives 32 gig total 18 gig in use consumer image 1.03 loaded no extras

Just for completion....i'm using developer 1.03 with displayserver and the time visual.....boot time when plugging in @home is 11 seconds. Booting a complete Linux System as fast as this is really empressing. Are there big parts of the complete LinuxARM Kernel removed or are these boot times normal on such "embedded" devices like the empeg ?

I can see this degenerating into 'my empeg can boot faster than your empeg!'

Anyhoo, I think the point is that the boot time is comparatively quick. When you put it into sleep mode, it is only paused and therefore the restart time is instant. I grow tired of waiting for my radio to do its restart after i start the car. It does a volume ramp (2.0???) when starting nd sometimes if I'm listening to something interesting, i'll delay starting the car so i don't miss anything.

This is only when I'm listening to the radio (Alpine), tho. When listening to the empeg tracks, the restart time is instant. I get a slight power-down from starting, which I could fix with capacitors I know.

Do people actually keep the empeg in standby all the time in the car? I have my standby timeout set to 4 seconds, so that I can still use my keyless remote.

I set mine to 10 minutes because I get in and out of the car alot and my keyless works fine with it on

I have mine set to a long (2 hour) timeout. This means that if i duck into a shop or something, the player will start up promptly. Not that 10 seconds or something is long.
The only problem with this is that there is occational false triggering to restart the unit. That is, I can leave the car and come back to find it playing. A bit creepy and a bit insecure. There must be some IR patterns that restart it.
Is it true that there is only one code on the Rio remote to restart the player. Any key on the Kenwood will awake it and I don't really think that this is too good.

Part of the secret is that the kernel itself is in flash memory, so the boot procedure starts while the drive(s) are still being spun up. Large parts of standard distribution's "let's throw everything in" kernel are omitted, of course.
