I'm helping out my family's church with their networking. When they first installed their current network, they went with 10/100 fiber/ethernet converters, and now we're working on getting everything up to gigabit.

The problem is that I never work with fiber (most of my clients don't need such distances). I've attached a photo of the current product in place. I had the church order two of these to replace the current adapters.

When I went to install the new ones, the plugs at the end of the fiber cables just didn't seem to fit into the new converter. The outlets seemed to shallow. Did I order the wrong equipment? What's the right one?

IT could just be different fiber connectors, can you post both model numbers?

Unfortunately I couldn't find a model number anywhere on the old fiber converters. I didn't have a record of their ordering, so I don't know what kind of connector they use. I've been researching the different types of fiber connectors, but I'm still confused because it seems like the "SC" type is exactly what I have currently, and that's what the new adapters are listed as having, but the plugs just didn't go into them neatly. It's like they were really loose, and could easily slide in and out before they were "snapped" out of the socket. It...just didn't seem right...

Photos of the current fiber cable connector end fittings might be useful.

What fiber connector type is specified for the new gigabit adapters?

Are there any specs or markings on the old adapters re: the fiber termination type?

The photo attachment in my first post shows the current in-place adapter, and the new adapters are listed as SC type, which is what I assumed was the standard...

My bad on the posted photo. For some reason I thought it was an image of the new gear.

I do not work with this stuff, but perhaps it is an OptoClip II, per Wikipedia.

It says SC on the connectors in the picture, so one would assume that they are SC connectors...

Edit: They seem to be Corning Anaerobic Connector, SC, 62.5 µm multimode (OM1) and the boxes you ordered are for 50/125µm or 2.5/125µm. I don't know if that matters, but it may be why they don't fit properly. Well, looking at the frequently bought together, they list a 62.5/125µm patch cable so maybe not... Unless 2.5/125µm is a typo and it should be 62.5/125µm.

You've got me on this one: how could you tell that they were 62.5/125 cables and not 50/125 or 9/125 (I only learned about these sizes two minutes ago after seeing your post)?

You're right, though, the product description says 50 and everyone seems to be buying 62.5 cables to go with it. I'm not sure why that is...

I didn't. I googled "Corning SC Fiber Connector" and found the connector on the Corning website. Since the connectors are beige, they would be 62.5µm. Other wave lengths have different colors.

It seems to me like there's more than just a diameter problem with the connectors on this new adapter, though. When I try to connect them, I get that usual *click* like the plug has been inserted, but then it just slides in and out, like the connector should be longer or something...
