Arstechnica writes about in-car infotainment, forget empeg

So arstechnica today has an article about the history of in-car infotainment and leaves out the empeg altogether. They go through a quick history from radio to cassette to ipod to smartphones. The empeg certainly was a niche product but I'm still a little surprised they made no mention of it at all. I added in a comment to the article. It isn't just the empeg they left out, it is every installable car MP3 player.

Wikipedia reckons < 6000, and riocar.org says: The total number of existing players in the world is about 4000 Mk2/2a players and about 350 Mk1 players

Wow, less than 6000. I wonder how many are currently functional. I've got two, unfortunately just sitting under used in a home dock.
I was really surprised it wasn't mentioned, but as Andy stated they really didn't bring in any installable players at all. Ars really could have gone much further with this story than they did.

I was really surprised it wasn't mentioned, but as Andy stated they really didn't bring in any installable players at all. Ars really could have gone much further with this story than they did. Agreed. They pretty much went radio > 8-track > cassette > CD > iPod. I suppose that on the macro level that's accurate, but they certainly didn't try for much detail. (BTW, I hate the idea of CarPlay. I know that's no surprise to anyone here.)

As far as I can tell, it is STILL the only one that lets you modify playlists on the fly. I don't know why others can't figure out how to append or insert songs into the current playlist. I swear, I used that function all the time when I wanted to hear a specific song.

Yep, the INSERT function is one of several reasons I'm still using my 'peg.
When I started using it, it was because it was the only available device that had enough storage for my entire music collection. Now I've got an iPhone with twice that much storage, but I keep using the 'peg because it's still so much better for playing music.
Still awesome after all these years.

Google's Play Android application certainly let's you insert playlists/songs/artists in to the current running order... I think PowerAmp too. Took them a while (what 10+ years) to catch up though. It's been a while since I used my empeg, but I'm pretty sure it didn't let you modify actual playlists - just the running order.
