I found this bug residing on top of my hat after a hike in the mountains this morning. It is a bit over one centimeter in length.

Can I assume that it is not a tick?

I think we have those here too, just have to recall the name. I think it is actually a "good" bug.

Hmm.. nope, the one we had around here is different: a "Lady Bug" larvae.

Guys, if you do a google image search for "spiky yellow insect" then it's on like the second or third page. It's the larva of the Argus tortoise-beetle.
