After ~15 years of faithful service, my car's off to the knacker's yard. This means that my empeg's had to come out. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can easily install it in the new car.

Sorry to read this. I've also been there and it sucks. Still hoping one day someone will make an Empeg app for my Android phone so I can simply stream my music to my car stereo straight from my phone, with Empeg functionality. I've given up all hope of ever being able to install an Empeg into any new car... frown

You mean, this app?

For me in a similar situation, my ideal solution might be an empeg-remote style app compatible with Android Auto. So the app could provide the full empeg interface on the in-dash touchscreen.

But I have no idea how one goes about adapting Android (or Apple CarPlay) apps to work in-dash. Obviously it's possible, but..

My second best ideal solution would be to find a suitable empeg-sized touchscreen panel and simply wire up a small micro running Linux to it, and connect that to empeg-in-trunk via a short run of cat5e (including PoE). I really do like this idea, and it's not all that difficult for me to implement. Just gotta find a suitable touchscreen. My thinking is that this solution could be more compact and easier to mount than simply using a real empeg display with the PCATS extender kit.

Third best, yet still pretty good, is Tony's bluetooth adapter. I have one of those here, yet shamefully have never yet powered it up.

Fourth best (because of the effort and wiring issues) would be to have in-empeg bluetooth support, without an external adapter box. I still like this idea a lot, but it doesn't seem to be happening here! smile

Unless I'm misunderstanding (which is entirely possible wink ), no, not really. Actually I'd like it to be an app which gives me the full Empeg experience on my Android (or Apple) phone, without actually using an Empeg. laugh (so basically having the Empeg software experience, without running it on Empeg hardware... but on my phone instead playing the MP3's from its storage)

I can imagine having the Empeg screen layout on my phone (landscape view of course) and I could use it like that. Or maybe even on my car's touch screen, using Android auto or CarPlay. That would be awesome.

But I also realize that would be a lot of work. Basically it would mean re-creating the Empeg software again. On the other hand, I remember somebody who's done it before, but I don't think it was ever released, let alone an app being created from its code.

*Sigh* I can still dream...

I'd pay so much for such an app.

Really, I can't still believe there's not such an App, or with similar features, on Android or iPhone. I miss the empeg interface so much, after so many years.

It certainly was released, but it's alpha code. What's there works great as a linux app, but probably isn't where you'd want to start for an Android app.

The audio decoding, display, and input are all decoupled, communicating across the network. The decoding is currently provided by libmad, and though there is an android port, you'd probably want something native to Android that supports more audio formats than mp3. The display portion is fairly simplistic -- it was about an afternoon's effort to have display in a VNC server. All of this makes sense, given the goals behind the project -- the decoder, the display, and the input may all be on different machines, but that architecture doesn't really make sense for an Android app.

And, although the menus behave, and visually look like what you're used to on the empeg, they are different menus. The majority of the functionality for dealing with playlists isn't there, there's no equalizer, etc. And this is really where the empeg shines. I like the nostalgia behind the empeg's display, but with technology having moved beyond a 128x32 pixel less-than-grayscale image, it's the functionality that I miss more, not the display.

I had planned on undertaking such a project for Android, but have never been able to find spare time to get going on it...(here)

Reading this thread is inspiring though wink
