i just got my new IBM 30GB drive and am trying to upgrade my empeg following the FAQ. all has gone well up until now. when i run the builder util it seems to be ok (finds the pump etc.) but at the very end it says: Error "Bad pump response to device select" occured during stage 0x20.

I have tried this 3 times now but still no luck :( any ideas?

thanks

Are you installing it as an extra drive or as a replacement to the 10 Gig you had ?

Cheers,
Hans

ps. the error message you have is discussed on the board on a few places, try a search for 'bad pump response'. There's a few pointers there on things you could do (mostly about the sequence of things to do and how). But with the little info you gave it is hard for me to judge if they apply to your situation as well.

its an extra drive (existing one is 10GB). I have looked at the posts on this board and have tried everything suggested without success. Out of frustration though i did try applying V1.03 consumer update to the new drive (even though i havnt got as far as getting the builder to work, and format it yet) and it appeared to work. Player rebooted and was fine. emplode wouldnt work though (i assume because the drive needs to be built properly).

does anyone know the process to manually format and mount a second disk? Thought id give this a go and then run the stress test to check the drives ok. Ive managed to format the drive using mke2fs but emplode still wont work. are there any other commands to be run or changes to the init?

Thanks

You need to install the builder upgrade with just the new drive in. Once the new drive is built properly, you can then apply the v1.03 upgrade. Until then, emplode will not find the extra space properly.

Hi Andy.

Let's try to get this straight:
Which procedure did you follow until you got the "bad pump response"?

Here is the standard way to do the upgrade (for a MkII):
  1. Jumper your new drive to master drive without slave.

  2. Open your empeg

  3. Remove your old drive and set it aside

  4. Insert your new drive in the location of the old drive

  5. Apply the "builder-image" upgrade to your empeg

  6. Remove the new drive

  7. Jumper your old drive to master with slave

  8. Re-install your old drive at its old location

  9. Jumper your new drive to slave

  10. Re-install your new drive to the position that was previously empty

  11. Apply the current consumer or developer image to your empeg

  12. Check that emplode sees the full storage capacity

  13. Close the empeg

If you get any error at any stage of this, post here with an exact description of what type of error you got at which stage.

If you really care to go the hard way (partition the new disc yourself), this is how you could do it:
  1. Open your empeg

  2. remove the old drive and check that its jumper is set to master (with slave, if that is an option), then re-install it

  3. jumper the new drive to slave mode

  4. install the new drive next to the old one

  5. apply the developer image to your empeg (this could also be done beforehand)

  6. connect the serial port of the empeg to your PC and start a terminal emulation (e.g. HyperTerm)

  7. power on the empeg

  8. quit the player by pressing "q"+RETURN

  9. enter "fdisk /dev/hdc"

  10. delete any existing partitions ("p"+RETURN will show you the durrent partition scheme, "m"+RETURN shows a small help)

  11. create a new partition using "n"+RETURN, a primary partition ("p"+RETURN), partition number 4 ("4"+RETURN), starting and ending at the default cylinders (two times RETURN)

  12. exit fdisk writing the partition table to the disc (press "w"+RETURN)

  13. create a file system on that partition: "mke2fs /dev/hdc4"+RETURN

  14. "mount -n -o rw /dev/hdc4 /drive1"+RETURN

  15. "mkdir /drive1/fids; mkdir /drive1/var"+RETURN

NOTE: Using this procedure, you are never able to use the new drive as your first drive, because it does not contain the scratch and program partitions. Though the current software (as of 1.03) does not use the additional partitions the second drive usually contains, SonicBLUE/empeg reserves the right to do so in later software versions. However, you gain some megabytes (about 100) of music storage using this procedure (for now). If empeg ever decides to use the second drives scratch partition (or any other of the additional partitions on the second disc), you will need to re-initialize the second disc (and thereby loose all the data on it).

Sven

Thanks for the info sven. I had gone through the upgrade procedure you mentioned and the error occured at step 5: Apply the "builder-image" upgrade to your empeg (right at the end of pumping the partition).

However it seems that although it gave the error at the end, the builder software had actually created the partitions on the new disk, so i have all the required partitions (6 of them). It just wouldnt boot up and run the format.

In the end i had to apply the developer software to the new disk, run mke2fs and create the required directories.

Still have no idea why i was getting this error but it all seems to be working ok now and emplode picks up the extra drive and synchronises fine.

Thanks for your help

andy

Is it possible there was an error in the builder file you downloaded?

Maybe you just needed to re-download the builder file with GetRight or something like that.

Hmm, have just put a DJSA 220 in my empeg and am trying to apply the builder upgrade but the upgrader won't even find the empeg!! I plug in the power when it says to, but it just times out with error 0x10. Turns out that when I apply the power the thing actually tries to boot rather than upgrading.

Any suggestions?

*please*!

Panic over. It was a bad *.upgrade file. Downloaded it again and everything worked fine The stress test is running at the moment. How long should you let that run for?

Horrible what is happening in the US at the mo. My commiserations to anyone who has friends and family involved.

Hmm, guess I will have to change my sig now too ...

It's strange that I hear all of my important news from the empeg BBS.

I was just reading this message when my telephone rang: My wife asking me if I'd heard about it.

I have no idea what to do or say, I am completely speechless.

OK, some notes on how my install went.

Although I hadn't had any problems with my original 6GB drive (IBM DARA 206) I noticed that there had been a fair bit of pressure on the spindle - it had left a really deep impression in the insulating tape, as had a couple of screws on the HDD. Therefore I decided to mount the 6GB drive on washers as well (my new drive is an IBM DJSA 220, and it is recommended to mount this unit on washers because excess pressure on the drive spindle has caused problems in one or two cases).

Otherwise the hardware side of things went pretty smoothly.

On the software side I have a small ammendment/correction for Tonys FAQ instructions. I wanted to copy my music from the old drive to the new one. Because I had installed the player software on the new drive the directories already existed and the command:
cp -v /drive1/fids /drive0/fids (Enter)
didn't want to work. I used
cp -v /drive1/fids/* /drive0/fids (Enter)
instead. OK it is only a really small thing, but maybe you want to update the FAQ. Nice instructions by the way!

I think that's all for now - will post again if I find anything else half way interesting
