I should pretext this by saying I accepted any of the following issues when I downloaded the new beta. I wanted (and still want it) really really really bad. Lets hope the following is my fault some how.
I'm running Win2K, and I was installing the developer beta for the RioCar version. S/N 30102603. In the car I have a tuner and a Sony stalk.
1. I uninstalled the old empeg USB drivers.
2. I uninstalled emplode (1.0.3)
3. Installed the new emplode (2.0b3)
4. Installed the new developer kernel (2.0b3)
Installation all completed perfectly, no errors given at any point.
Immediately after the kernel install, the empeg reboots, flashy new startup guys!!! Then it puts up the static logo, gives me the initial loading stuff screen, then flashes to a screen with one horizontal line across the middle of the screen. It then immediately reboots and repeats.
Here's what I saw flashing by on the serial port ... If this is insufficient detail, I can give you more ...

I don't know if it did any checking, but perhaps the downloaded image was corrupt - it might be worthwhile checking it again.
Also, give consumer a go - I've d/l that and got it working, so perhaps the dev. image is broken.
Is yours a Mk2 or Mk2a?

MAke sure you have downloaded the correct image for your player - ie. that you are not mistakenly downloading a Mk 1 image to a Mk 2 or vice versa. Each image is optimised for the available memory of the hardware in each player, so exceptions and seg faults as you see in your boot log dump may point to this. If you screw your eyes up and look hard enough at the log (ignoring junk that came from the kernel) you'll see:
E !! local_audio_component.cpp 543: Invalid tune information for ID 0x0. This is bad.
I suspect this is a red herring but the traceback looks like something to do with the playlist code. I'll investigate further tomorrow.
Has anyone done much with empty playlists?

I have an empty one, hang on, I'll check it.
Nope, behaves fine on mine. Empty playlists say "none" on the player screen and don't let you try to play them. Selecting an empty playlist in Emplode and hitting Play results in "end of playlist" on the player but no crashes. ___________

Also note that reinstalling the 1.03 developer kernel brings it back to life.
Also, if I forgot to mention this elsewhere, it didn't help installing the client version of 2.0b3.

I have the same symptoms. The player restarts after two or three seconds (after only displaying a horizontal line for a fraction of second). Attached is serial log.
Reverting to 1.03 worked.

One last note and I'll leave you guys alone. It doesn't make any difference if I take it out to the car and plug it in where there is a tuner.

I had the same problems as mentioned above, here is how I fixed mine:
The blank line is a visual, everything else worked once I switched to the menu.
No sound came out because the volume on the player was all the way down.
Everything seems to work fine for me.

I can't get to the menu to change anything. I realize it's a visual, but the machine is in a semi-endless loop. No amount of anything will bring up a menu before it reboots again.

I'm having this problem too. I have been able to see a menu, by repeatedly pressing the menu button whilst it's booting, but it still reboots automatically anyway.
Well, I like the animation, anyway. Back to 1.03, I guess...

It should be very hard to get a corrupted .upgrade file as it is internally length and CRC checked.

So that makes three of us right? BryanR, bonzi, and myself. What do we have in common?
1. I've got two drives, one 10 gig, and one self-installed IBM 30 gig.
2. I 've got my IP address hard set, not on DHCP.
3. I've got just over 3000 titles which span both drives, barely.
4. I previously edited that config file for PalmEmpeg to show more output on the serial, but that should have been wiped during the reinstall.
5. I've got an actual RioCar player (Mk2a?)
6. I have a tuner in the car.
7. I have a sony stalk in the car.
8. I was previously using 1.03 (most people were I guess)

That's what I thought. And besides, it being corrupted so subtly that kernel and root FS are OK, and player almost runs, is extremely unlikely. But one clutches the proverbial straw... . Dragi "Bonzi" Raos

Quite a few similarities here! I have:
1. Two drives - one 12 gig and one self-installed IBM 30 gig.
2. IP address hard-set.
3. I've got over 4500 titles, spanning both disks.
4. I had it spitting out more info on the serial line, for something I was messing about with myself.
5. I've got a Empeg Mk2
6. I have a tuner.
7. (nope)
8. I was previously running 1.03 (developer).
Before upgrading, I had kernal hacks for VolAdj, IRHack and KnobAppend, and Picker running in my init script. Of course, these should have all gone now. I've also got quite a few things in and under /drive0/var, not that that should make any difference, either.
Bryan.

I previously edited that config file for PalmEmpeg to show more output on the serial, but that should have been wiped during the reinstall.
The config file lives on the music partition and is not rewritten by an upgrade.

Just as a quick test, I removed the following from my config.ini file:
[output]
timecodes=1
notify=1
And now it works correctly!
Right, I'm happy now...

WEEEHOOO!
I only removed the notify=1 and left in [output] and timecodes=1 and it also works!!! But no output on serial now anymore.... IIRC, I have read about dropping 'notify' support in future releases, so I guess this is what it was then.
After changing the config.ini I got another error concerning the empty playlist. I went into the menu and selected a playlist and it works! Well that resolves bug #1119 then.
I'm out driving now ญญ______________

No, it was a bug -- I guess none of us (and no-one on the alpha list) had serial notify enabled. Or else they managed never to power up into an empty playlist.

So I have a Mk.1 player (serial 00366), and I downloaded the correct image for the player. I have exactly the same symptoms as described above, and my config.ini (/empeg/var/config.ini) does not contain an output section, let alone those two keys. :-(
I was previously running 1.02, and am now running 1.03. Attached are a partial log of the boot messages as well as my config.ini.
