Are the hard drives IDE or SCSI? I'd be interested in attempting to add an external Jaz drive to the system.

From the "tech" section of the empeg website:

"HDD ports 2 ATA 2.5" HDD standard 2MM headers on main board HDD bays accept 17mm, 12.7mm or 8mm standard laptop drives with corner mounting screws.Serial IO Full 9-pin PC serial port on head unit, data rate to 230Kbits/s. TX, RX, GND, +12V @ 100mA on 300mm flying lead from docking connector, terminated in 9 pin female socket"

So they are IDE (in fact I'm not sure you can get notebook sized SCSI hard drives anymore, even Apple have been using IDE drives in their notebooks for years).

Can't see how you are going to attach an Jaz drive to it either.

The Orb drive would be nice to see in one of these type of devices. 2.2gigs of storage that is as fast as a hard drive, but way better then a Jaz. Reason I say this is a Jaz drive is basicially a hard drive complete with the platters and heads like a hard drive. The Orb on the other hand uses flexible media, therefore making media cheap and durable. ($30 for a disk). And the drive it's self is $200. It might be nice to have an empeg unit with the built in hard drive and an Orb drive for expandibility one day.

Even if you could attach it (unlikely, as we don't have SCSI), a Jaz/Orb drive is NOT a good idea. These drives have high head mass and as such are NOT good in vibrating/shocked environments - the totally enclosed, very light (remember the scale of 2.5" drives) are what gives 2.5" drives their great shock tolerance.
