I had the bad luck of getting a virus which deleted 50% of my mp3 collection before I could stop it. Really annoying.
Most of the mp3's are still on the empeg though, but how do I get them back from there?

I remember the discussion of legal issues, but also remember someone installed an ftp/web server on the empeg which enabled him to retrieve mp3s from the empeg.

Anyone have a running solution which would be easy to install?

Thanks.

display server 1.1 i think would be your best bet not the fastest method but pretty idiot proof go and have a look at frank van gestels sight via the riocar sight.

I shall see if i can dig up the idiot guide i made up for my own use.

it will only work over ethernet so hopefully you will have an ethernet card etc. if not could be time to go shopping.

Does Display Server include provisions for copying or just its playing provisions? If it's only going to allow you to pull one song at a time, I say take a few extra minutes (or whatever time), do some more reading, and install a real FTP service onto the empeg. At least then you can mget an entire directory.

Or you can probably use telnet and sz (zmodem transfer) it over.

It allows you to download a coulpe of songs at a time but if you get an download manager like Gozilla you can basically let it get on by it's self. it ain't perfect but it is easy.

It is interesting that this topic was brought up again. I lost my MP3s off my hard drive a while ago. However, last week I finally started working on a backup utility using Display Server 1.1. I expect to have a working copy in about a week or two.

If you don't mind post some details of how you have it designed and how it will operate from a user standpoint.

Have you created it to only copy all the actual MP3 files or are you putting in the ability to back up the database (how about db without the actual mp3 files)? Both are useful, but I do keep a copy on a spare 60GB drive of all my CDs. My biggest concern is probably losing my db after working on getting the sorting and layout just right.

I saw that someone else had also made something, but I didn't see anyone mention if they had ever tried using it to put the data back onto the empeg. This is pretty important, IMO.

At this point, it is designed to put the MP3s in the same folder hierarchy as the playlists on the Empeg. I attached a screen shot of what the utility dumped to my temp directory to illustrate what I mean. For me, this is the most logical way to do it. As soon as the utility works reliably, I will post it in the programming section. If people want to use it, they're more than welcome. However, at this point I am only making it to get the MP3s off my Empeg without having to click 2,000 links to download 2,000 tracks.

Fair enough. Are you including the ability to do the "recovery" on a selective basis? Or does it just grab the entire contents of both drives on the empeg?

I'm sure a lot of people will be very pleased with your utility, looking good.

Looking forward to try that utility, I actually found out that my virus only put the files in hidden mode so I could get them all back ... but next time something happends I may not be that lucky and then it would be great to be able to recover the files!
