I have recently put XP professional on my machine and now the only way the empeg (V1.03) will sync is with the serial cable (slow). I have only got the usb port to work once and have not been able to duplicate it. Anybody have any answers?

Make absolutely sure that you install the correct USB driver for the Empeg-Car.

I think that if you plug the car player into an XP box, by default, it gives you an option to use a built-in WindowsXP driver for "Rio". This is the wrong driver and it won't work with the car player.

In order to use the correct driver, you have to run the Emplode setup before plugging in the car player with USB.

I'm not certain about the above, and do not have XP handy to test it against. If you could check this and verify it, please give us any information you can, as I would like to add it to the FAQ.

I'm not running XP anymore (and wasn't running on any machine with Emplode installed) but I was using a friend's XP machine over the weekend, installed Emplode and tried to hook up my empegcar without any luck. I did install Emplode first, and then hooked up the empeg.

I didn't spend any time on solving the problem, but I wanted to mention that I saw the same thing.

I still cannot get the USB to work with either v1.03 or v2.00beta3. I tried reinstalling the old drivers from 1.03 and they will not be accepted in v2.00beta3. My device manager says that the driver being used is RIOHD.sys and it is working properly. When I am in emplode v2.00b3 and search for my player on the usb it finds it with the little player icon sort of grayed out. when I hit OK on select player screen it gives me the error " player not found". Only the serial port will work for now and it is so slow. There is still the problem that after I upload songs and it goes through the paces it has a problem sychronising after. Any ideas?

Mmm, I had no problems with my XP Pro setup under an Ethernet connection. Both v1.03 and v2.00Beta3 worked fine. You may want to consider getting an ethernet hub if you don't already have one, they're pretty cheap.

Sorry I can't help you with your USB question....

I was able to connect the empeg to XP only one time, and that was just long enough to upgrade the player to 2.0b3. Since then, they didn't play very well together at all. Usually it was an error in either the first or second step if you look at Emplode's Details (or whatever) dialog.

Right, you wouldn't have any trouble with Ethernet. The problem only crops up in XP with USB.

Sure, a valid workaround would be to say "Just use ethernet", but I'm thinking from the perspective of "let's find the USB bug under XP so it doesn't happen in 2.0 final".

Empeg guys, any insights on this?

I gave up on the USB option. I now have v2.0b3 and an ethernet connection (crossover cable) and it has solved all my problems. Everything works as it should.

Ok, well I for one would like to know the answer to this. I just upgraded both of my computers to Windows XP and now I can't update my player. All I can do is use the serial port. No way am I going to upload tunes via serial. Pardon me for only having a Mark 1 unit. :)

For some reason it seems to get syncronization problems on step 2. Sometimes it will get to step 3, but rarely. When it does get there you can't restart the process, you get a invalid cookie.

I installed the USB driver properly.

Well, for $199 plus a nominal shipping fee you can fix your problem and add ethernet support. It's a lot less complicated than retrofitting your Mk1 too. You just upload all the music to the new Mk2a you'll have. :)

No. It generally works fine for us on WinXP Home and Pro. Which flavour of WinXP is this?

Tony, this sounds exactly like the issue I'm having with USB on WinXP Professional. Very consistent symptoms. (I also use Ethernet - no contest, even if USB was working!)

One thing to note is the detection and installation of USB devices is slightly different than under Win2K and earlier. This may (or may not) have something to do with it. I also recall a big warning about the driver not being "XP Certified" (read: "the right bits aren't twiddled in the resource file" - heh-heh). I've also heard of OTHER USB drivers no longer working in XP (not just this one).

I'm willing to help out here if anyone can send me a debug version of emplode. I'll generate some log files for ya or something ...

You can generate log files with the release version of emplode. Tools|Options|Troubleshooting.
