I have no ideas but to help more knowledgeable folk than me go to the riocar bbs and follow the instructions on how to connect to it via hyperterminal and then post the output on the BBS and someone will pipe up with a answer. You should of got a serial cable in the box with the machine.

You probably have a loose hard drive cable. See the "Troubleshooting" section of the FAQ at www.riocar.org.

Seeing as this is a new unit, it might be from the same batch as mine. That and other experiences on here would point to a badly crimped cable.

The warranty stickers on the new players I've seen are on the drive tray. So you can open the unit to look at the cable connection to the drive, but you can't see the connection to the motherboard - that would involve breaking the seals.

I suspect David is going to be really busy with emails over the next few weeks - he's already posted mentioning his queue is up to 100 or so. :)

My 3 new Mk2a's are in town at FedEx and I should have them Monday. Guess I'll know then if they too have bad cables.

I thought these things go thru lots of tests before they are shipped... I'm sure none of the tests would go right if the thing wouldn't boot up?

Yes they are tested at the factory after final assembly. But sometimes empegs get handled roughly during shipping and the drive connectors come loose. (At least they did before they started gluing them on)

They do go through lots of tests, including burn-in; they're also then shipped halfway around the world. We're aware of some badly made HDD cables which test fine in the factory, but fail in real life after some vibration; there's little we can do about it since EOL (ie, we can't shout at the suppliers, they won't take any notice) apart from fix players which show the fault. Our manufacturer changed supplier without us OKing the new part.

[email protected] are the people to talk to, but almost definitely you have a loose/bad hdd cable.

Makes sense... I bet they do get quite a beating getting shipped all over the place. I can't wait to get mine... it should get here Monday!
