Ok, I own a 1993 red Grand Prix LE 4dr. I got a Crutchfield manual and it clearly describes how to get the console and everything apart. Now, I have a bit of a problem. I don't want get rid of the original stereo(AM/FM/cassette deck) but I also want to add a Rio Car (Empeg) which is unamplified and contains no radio tuner. I know exactly where to mount it, but my problem is how do I wire it up to my audio system? The stereo has no audio inputs. Plus the old stereo's output is amplified and It has no preamp outputs. I would basically like to have the rio, but at the same time leave the original stereo in and be functional. Can someone please help me figure this out.

It sounds like, in your particular situation, with your particular requirements, an FM modulator is the way to go. That way, you can still use your factory stereo to power the speakers. This is covered in the FAQ section of riocar.org.

Your other options are:

- Replace the factory stereo completely with the empeg, adding an amp.

- Replace the factory head unit with an aftermarket head unit that's got Aux-ins and will power your factory speakers.

It's up to you. Make sure to read through the FAQ at www.riocar.org , especially the installation section.

Or...
Send the outputs of the factory stereo through a
line-level down-converter and into the empeg player AUX and
add an extra amp.

But the FM tuner sounds like the best option probably...

Agreed. FM would be best. Unamplifying speaker level outputs is never recommnded. Besides, you'd need that amp. With the FM modulator, you don't need anything else, and it's only $30 or so.
