The tuner has always occasionally been lost in the car; that's normal and not a problem.

But since upgrading to Hijack v228, the rate of losing tuner has increased from about 1 in 100 in-car boots to about 2 in 3.

Mark, did you break anything with the tuner-detection code?

Eh? "Losing" the tuner shouldn't happen at all... It doesn't for me, and I use it a lot. What are the symptoms when it goes out? Can you just not switch to it at all? Does a reboot fix it? Is this a bug, or is your tuner module just flaky?

I'm getting similar problems......but up to now it did'nt occur to me it might be Hijack doing it. My tuner gets "lost" the first time its inserted into the car (after being used on my desk). If I leave it in the cradle and reboot it, the tuner is normally "found".
Has this actually been confirmed as a hijack "bug" ?

Nothing broken there that I know of. My own tuner works fine. But it's at home on AC power.

??

If it was, it would have been fixed already!

Losing the tuner is something that's known to happen if the voltage dips at the wrong time during startup; I think that's well-known here. It's possible that I've just been unlucky lately, or the timing of when tuner detection is done has changed so that it happens when I start the engine, or the timing of starting the engine has changed (this is ambient-temperature-dependent - I normally start as soon as the glow plugs cut out).

Symptoms are that the player appears to be one without a tuner - no "Radio" entry in sources menu, "Tuner" button on remote is ignored, etc.

I suspected Hijack, because that's the only thing I know I've changed this week, and I know Mark mentioned he was doing something related to tuner detection.

It'd be nice if the kernel had a couple of goes at detecting the tuner - before and after hard-disk detection, perhaps?

The kernel currently does not do the tuner detection (that may change in Hijack soon, but by default, that's how it works).

The player software (userland) does the tuner detection, after the drives are up and spinning.

Cheers

Thanks - I'd assumed that tuner detection was done in one of the drivers.

It was just much easier to stick tuner control in userspace, really, hence lack of driver for it. It works just fine, too, so...

Subsequent testing is consistent with the theory that it's the timing of when I start the engine that caused the problems. Now I wait a little after the glow plugs have finished their work.

Maybe I could just switch Hijack's HD detection back to "Two Drives" - but I thought the stock kernels only looked for one drive in the car (on an empeg that had one drive last time it was on AC)?

No, stock kernels always look for both drives.
