Can someone give me some information on the way that the empeg broadcasts itself out to a network? I'm interested in perhaps disabling because the net police here at work might be slightly peeved if they place a sniffer on this segment and find out someone is running this device on their network.

It doesn't. The broadcast packet is sent from emplode. If you don't run emplode -- no packets.

Actually, that's not strictly true -- if your net police are particularly anal, they might spot the empeg using DHCP to acquire an IP address.

That shouldn't be a problem; I don't think they're all that anal. Good architecture by design on the part of the empeg, though...

Note that if you're running the Hijack kernel, the player WILL respond to certain packets because Hijack includes an HTTP server. So if you don't want the player making itself known, then don't install Hijack or disable the Hijack features.

Yeah, but respond to, and originate are two different things.

Otherwise Tony makes a good point -- your sysadmin might run a port scanner to see if anyone's running unauthorised services. Since Hijack is on port 80 (the default http port), more notice might be taken.

Incidentally, as Roger mentioned, if you run Emplode, Emplode will (by default) broadcast on port 8300 to find all Empegs "within reach". However, if you switch to unicast (i.e. just turn off broadcast in Emplode and specify the IP address of the Empeg), you'll be fine. Mike
