I just recived my backup empeg from sonicblue and I havn't even upgraded it yet, but i've discovered that it's handle is actualy spring loaded and snaps nicely back into place when you release it. My "old one" is two and a half months old, but it's never snapped back into place and has always needed to be pushed back into place.

Has anyone else had this problem? I figured I'd post in adition to emailing support because It's something I never realized wasn't right, and figured there could be others out there that have never seen another empeg besides their own.

You can adjust the fascia as well as the handle to help with the snap back problem. It's been mentioned a few times before.

My Mk2 handle is not good at snapping back. It has springs, but they dont' work particularly well.

My friend's Mk2a works really well and snaps smartly into place.

My Mk2a is a smart snapper as well...

Was this not a specific design issue? My Mk2 never snapped back, but the handle sits nice and flush, but my Mk2a, to get the snappy effect has the handle dropped by a millimetre or so, so in the dash it is slightly less neat.<br>
You can make your Mk2 snap by very carefully shaving off the piece of metal which chafes, but is it necessary?
To be honest, I didn't even know it was supposed to snap until I got my Mk2a.

I believe it was. The handle on the Mark 2 looks good, but runs into the black plastic facia when used. This led to mine breaking at all 4 screwpoints due to the factory tightning one down too much and breaking it initially.

The 2a has the handle mounted a bit lower, producing a gap and misaligning the facia design and the two cutouts on the handle, but not causing the handle to rub against the facia.

When I got my unit, my handle was horribly disfigured. It had been cast in such a way that the short parts weren't really perpendicular to the long part. It looked ugly as hell, and definitely wouldn't snap closed.

When I installed a replacement handle, the unit looked great, but the handle still needed to be pushed closed. I assumed there was something bent inside, but moved the fascia a tiny bit just in case. It springs closed perfectly now.

So, yeah, uh, try adjusting the fascia.

A lot of times, due to manufacturing tolerances, either you want 1) buttons that bind or 2) a handle that snaps back. Pick 1.

Well, my friend's 2a doesn't have binding buttons, and its handle works great. But he does have a small gap between the fascia and the handle. So maybe that's a third multiple-choice option.

The friction on my handle doesn't seem to be against the fascia, but due to the metal locking tabs rubbing against the inside of the case. A minor tweaking with a pair of pliers helped immensely. (You have to take the fascia off to do this, and be extremely careful about the display! It doesn't take much force to tweak the tabs.)

In my case, there's no friction anywhere (fascia, locking tabs, whatever). In my case the problem is that the springs just don't have much "snap" to them. The handle actually falls nicely into place when I put the player into the dash, because it's angled back. It's just that there's no satisfying "snap" of the handle going back into place...

Yup, I've had the exact same problem with my second MK2a. I've posted about this before.
An annoying side efect of this was that in my case the player ratteled in it's sled because the handle didn't snap back enough. But last week I had to send in my unit for repairs (it didn't remember time/date) and since David couldn't find the exact cause of it himself and Hugo was out of the country, David transplanted my HD's in a new unit and sent that one to me.
This new unit not only works great, but also has a nice snappy handle. Two problems fixed at once! Thank you Empeg!

Mine's working good too, actually. (I'm just wrestling with the internals..)

Did you have any other symptoms with this? I'm finding that mine dosn't remember the time/date either (we're back to July 1st, 2001 again!) as well as the lockup with switching to Aux, and Remote dropouts..

No, apart from it's time/date amnesia, the player worked flawlessly.
However I must admit that it too has locked up once or twice, but I blamed that on the nature of the beta software. My remote has never stopped functioning.
I can't say anything about the aux source switching since I don't have anything connected to the aux port and therefor have never had the need to switch to it.
I don't have Hijack running -yet- (I really must install that one of these days)
