OK, reading up, it looks like the Blau Thummer RCIII remote is not compatible with the empeg because it does not use the correct frequency.

Should it not then be possible to just swap out the crystal in the thummer so
that it will make the correct frequency? I should think so.

Hmmm... If I connect an IR receiver to a frequency counter, I should be able to see the frequency of IR transmissions, no?

It would be a hoot if you could pull this off. Let us know how it goes.

a freq. counter takes an electrical input, so you'll need an optical to electrical converter. but, there might be a different modulation of the signal as well. could be as simple as OOK (on off keying), or ASK (amplitude shift keying). not sure which standards are used.

This seems like a lot of trouble to go through to use the thummer remote. Back when I couldn't afford empeg(s) I planned on getting a Blau minidisc deck and a thummer remote, but I never went and played with one. So, the question is what is why a thummer remote over something that already works out of the box like a kenwood?

I agree... but I am a Blaupunk head unit owner, so it would be nice to have some sort of remote that could control both my head unit, and the RIO. I'm not sure if my head-unit is even compatible with the Thummer (a Key Largo). Too bad that there isnt a generic steering weel remote that can be programmed for any head unit. (Or a head unit with the RIO's flexibilty in accepting any remote.)

Could you purchase a learning remote and program it for both? I recently downloaded an app for my PocketPC that allows it to be used as a remote and also allows the use of CCF files to program it. Its pretty slick. I don't remember the name of the file but you can find it at www.remotecentral.com

Quite simply, I don't like how the others look. My car is pretty unique and I don't want ugly things inside.

Plus, I don't want one that goes on the back of the wheel because there is no good place for it.

So if anyone knows one similar then I am all for it!

Try Pioneer. It mounts more or less like Blaupunkt but is compatible with empeg (OK, perhaps Blaupunkt looks a bit better). There are some pics on the board, too.
