I got a job offer today in San Antonio, but I'm not sure if I should take it. I really don't want to go through the pain of relocation but I might have to. I was wondering if anyone here lives in San Antonio and could tell me what the cost of living is like and whether its a nice place to live?

You have to tell us where you currently live, too.

I will say that if your current location is Minnesota, you might not like it. (Then again, you may be glad to get out of the cold, I don't know.)

I live in Austin, 1 1/2 hours and a world away from SA. SA is big, not really big city like NYC or Chicago, it's spread out big like Phoenix. Lots fo stuff to do around SA, Six Flags, Sea World, yes a Sea World in the middle of Texas, fishing (my favorite ) and plenty of Mexican culture. Great Mexican and Tex-Mex food, lots of stuff happening downtown year around.
As for COL, I think it's similar to Austin, maybe not as high. Like I said, it's a large place, so you can find rent rates in all ranges. New Braunfels is up I-35 a bit, 1/2 hour or so, and it's a cool place too. Lots of people liek to live in the San Marcos/New Braunfels area and commute.
Check out www.sa360.com for some more info. I don't know a whole lot abotu SA, just go there for concerts mostly, and drive through on the way to go fishing down in South Texas.

Edit Your profile says you're in Houston, so you probably know about as much about SA as I do. Either way, it's gotta be better than Houston, right?

I agree with Tony, Jeff. I've been to Houston, San Antonio and other parts of Texas and it doesn't seem like it would be a huge adjustment if you like Houston and Texas in general. I actually spent 6 months in San Antonio many years ago (at Fort Sam). I have to say that compared to the freezing winter hills of Fort Knox, Kentucky, we all thought we had died and gone to heaven!

San Antonio is pretty big, spread-out, with lots of miltary and bases. Once you've seen the underwhelming Alamo, you may have exhausted the list of historic attractions, but downtown has some interest - canals/riverwalk, restaurants (yes, the best Mexican food I rememeber ever having on this side of the border) and clubs.

If the opportunity seems like a good one (and depending on your estimate of prospects in Houston), I'd give it a shot.

Thanks, thats kind of the information I was looking for. My wife and I drove up to SA about a year ago but I didn't notice much (I'm a guy, we don't notice details). I'd hate to move as I'm pretty involved in my church, but as jobs in Houston are few I don't seem to have much of a choice. I have till monday to decide. . .

Isn't San Antonio the murder capital of the southeast or something?

You must be thinking of San Antonio, Ibiza -- the murder capitol of the Mediterranean.

Murder capital? More like dodgy bar and alcohol poisoning capital of the Mediterranean. Ooo. The memories haunt me still

Well, I took the job today so I'm off. . . Wish me luck!

(Someone told me today you get get across SA in rush hour in 45 min! If thats true I will simply be amazed. You can't make it across Houston in 60 min even without traffic).

Is that driving the illegal speed limit(55), or the real speed limit (60-70)?

I would hate that new speed limit even more if it wasn't for two things.

1) No one goes it, so you need to keep up with traffic.
2) My empeg

Speaking of Empeg making things better, since we have to sell the house and my wife is staying in Houston until its sold, I am now more glad than ever to have an Empeg. It's a three hour drive and boy does the Empeg make it SOOO much nicer.

Your first duty as a new citizen of SA will be to quit whining about not having any water and wanting the water from Austin's supplies...

I have no idea what this means, but I guess I will find out soon enough!
