(I read the FAQ)

A while ago, there were some hacks for the Empeg player that allowed a shell-level login and/or web server connectivity to the player itself.

I wonder if there exists newer hacks that will work with the latest beta software. Or if they plan on including some additional functionality like that in the beta/developer images.

It would be nice to have the web-enabled player to manage content, download, stream, etc.

Umm, did you read the FAQ (linked at the top of the page)?

For the ability to get a shell (over serial), just install the developer edition of the player software. For web/ftp server (and a slew of other cool stuff) install Hijack
(also linked at the top of the page...)

Then you could install telnetd to be able to telnet to the empeg. Been done, search the board.

You can get a shell using the developer image of the player software provided by empeg/Rio.

For a web server, you would want to check out Hijack.

At the risk of sounding redundant - almost everything you ask for currently exists in the standard build most empeg owners probably use (ie developer build of 2.0b11 and hijack)
This gives you your shell prompt (over serial) but just do a quick BBS search for telnet and you will find a couple of solutions.
