Suppose someone accidentally installed a Car1 upgrade onto a 2/2a player. Or perhaps they installed a Car2 image onto a Mk1 player. Besides the usual things going wrong, is there a specific line in the serial boot log that would indicate a Mk1 build or a Mk2 build of the player software?

It probably won't mention the ethernet chip for a Mk1 player image on a Mk2 and the USB chips are different between a Mk1 and Mk2 as well.

I don't have a boot log convienent at the moment so I can't tell you what is what.

The hardware isn't my concern, you can tell pretty clearly what the hardware is from looking at the boot log. It's the software image that I want identified, whether I'm seeing a bootlog from a Car1 or a Car2 image.

Yeah but the kernels for a Mk1 and Mk2 are configured differently.

The Mk1 kernel only has the driver for the NatSemi USBN9602 USB chip whilst Mk2 kernels only have the driver for the Philips PDIUSB12 USB chip. If it detects a valid USB chip then the player image is correct for that model. If it doesn't then either something is broken or they've put the wrong player image on.

A Mk2 image will also have support for a SMC9194 ethernet chip.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I'm just saying that if someone sends me a boot log and they're telling me "USB quit working after I installed beta 11", which line of the boot log would I look at to see whether they had accidentally installed Car1 upgrade onto their Mk2?

Ah okay.

A Mk1 image will print out "empeg usb initialised, USBN9602 revision xx" whilst a Mk2 will have "empeg usb initialised, PDIUSBD12 xx"

Can't really test it because I've only got a Mk2a. I'll have another dig around the kernel source.

The empeg guys really should put a check into the kernel to tell people if they've got the wrong player image for their empeg. All the information is already there since the hardware revision number is in the flash and they need to build seperate kernels for Mk1s and Mk2s anyway. Another thing for the wish list?

Actually, doesn't the new player upgrade files have a new chunk inside that tells the upgrade utility which hwrevisions are allowed?

The upgrader utility is supposed to do that, but only if you're using a newer version of the upgrader.
