Does anyone have any info on listening to mpeg-4 aac format on the empeg? The AAC fact sheet states that AAC 128 kbps is “indistinguishable” from the original uncompressed audio source. I'd love to be able to save space and listen to higher quality music all at the same time!

Greetings!

If I remember correctly, there was a licensing issue with the AAC format. There was discussion a while back about it, but there was not enough interest in really pushing it forward.

I realize it is a FAQ entry - but I'd like to find out more info other than "The empeg doesn't currently play this format." If any one has more info, I'd like to find out. Or - if anyone has more info on the licensing issues involved - that would be great!

Apple just released is Public Preview version of QuickTime 6 which plays this format and many many other companies are working on player software. This is what really sparked my interest.

Greetings!

Most recent thread - August 2001. Basically, it looks like the license was a problem, but that may or may not have been resolved by Rio. There is still very little demand for it, though, compared to other codecs (flac, ogg vorbis, etc.). With the Jubilee holiday in progress, I wouldn't expect any official word until tomorrow.

It's a commercial format, and there isn't a chance we're going to licence it for the car player.

We paid for WMA for every car player we ever sold (even though I suspect a small percentage actually use it) because we had previously promised that format - but there has never been much demand for AAC.

Ah - well... Not the answer was hoping for, but an answer all the same. It's too bad Dolby is crying so much about licensing the format. You'd think they'd like the format to be adopted quickly and easily... It sounds like a nice format - but I guess it's all up to ogg.

I'll stop short of discussing the specifics of a contract.
