I am preparing to upgrade my MK2 unit, and I have a question as far as hard drive mouting and jumpers are concerned.

I plan to use a pair of new IBM Travelstar drives, and I am quite familiar with them as I have done countless laptop upgrades, etc.

However, in every instance prior, I have never had to supply the following (and the drives in OEM packaging do not provide):

1. Mounting Screws
2. Jumpers

I saw a link in the FAQ to Farnell, but they are apparently in the UK, and I am in the USA.

So, I need to know the following:

Will I actually have to jumper the two drives as Master & Slave, or will the IDE cable already present in the unit do this automatically via Cable Select?

If someone has a link to a US Merchant selling the appropriate jumpers and screws, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Rob

You can find the correct jumpers on floppy drives if you have any of them laying around unused. I found the screws at the hardware store but i cant remember exactly what thread and type they were.

Sean,

Thanks for the information.

I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that the jumpers for desktop (3.5") drives were larger than the jumpers most commonly used for laptops (2.5") and therefore were prone to falling off, etc.

If anyone has the specs on the screws, I would appreciate it!

Thanks Again,

Rob

Yes, the jumpers on 3.5 hard drives are bigger, but floppy drives use smaller jumpers.

I simply stoll 2 screws from one of the drives... so there are 2 screws holding each one in. It has held my drives for over 18 months with no issues. It is even mentioned in the upgrade guide.

The screws are the same type that are used to screw in a CD-rom or a floppy drive in a PC. They may be a little longer, but I fixed that by putting two washers between each screw and the Harddisk. That way there's also no way the harddisk will ever touch the metal of the drive bay too.

Ben,

Do you have a part # on those jumpers? That link wasn't valid for me, but I was able to pull up the main page so I don't think it was my connection.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks, the Jameco part number has been added to the drive upgrade FAQ. If someone has a similar part number for the drive mounting screws, I'll put that in, too.
