I usually go on a hunt for the local microbrews to find something I like, either that or hunt out bars etc that have something other than miller or bud. But that sometimes means waiting for a local beerfest.
I love english Directors, real Bass, Pedigree, Black Sheep. The problem is that with most of the really nice english beer is that they have to kill it to export it, so the Bass you can drink in the USA is a pale shadow of the real thing.
In NJ I loved Flying Fish or Riverhorse beers which I found at the NJ Craft Brewers festival in Waterloo.
In Austin we have some great places such as Fados or the Dog & Duck which have casks of Fullers ESB or Bellhaven Scottish Ale.
Locally made, Live Oak do some nice beers and I have a soft spot for Shiner and the many micros. But there are so many decent beers here I haven't got through them all.
