Since I know there are many people here that use Palm devices, I thought I'd share something cool I've come across in the past week. The author of Betaplayer for PPC ported much of the code to the Palm platform and released a new Media player called TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player). It's fast, open source, virtually flawless in video playback and can be downloaded here. I love it when an open source project can totally crush all other products in the same space (MMPlayer, Kinoma) in only a few weeks.

I've been ripping my DVDs to pocket-sized XviD files using Fair Use Wizard so I can play them on my Tungsten T5. I bought a crystal clear case for my PDA and ripped some cartoons so now my son can watch cartoons on my Palm. Quality on the palm is pretty good at around ~256M a movie, so I could fit 4 movies onto my 1g SD card.

Very nice. Would you recommend Betaplayer for the PPC?

So what kind of bitrate did that end up with? If you're talking movies, I assume it's probably around 200Kbps? Yeah, that would probably look good on that size screen. I love FairUse, and it's good to see other people use it too.

I just like the "F U" icon.

Thanks for the great links for Palm accessories, Mark! I'm still hunting for a good case for my Zire72, and that site has several that look good.

Cheers

I don't know, I've never used it! If it works as good as TCPMP (they share the same algorithms) then I definitely would. I believe that they are trying to merge into one product - same features and options just different platforms (Palm/PPC).

Yup, appx. 200Kbps. The movie size is 440x320 and under 256M. I set the size so I could fit more movies onto SD cards. Obviously LOTR wouldn't look good in 256M but most movies will be watchable. I'm using XviD 2-pass to get the size down, and FUW works great for that. I also like the way FUW allows you to crop the video before encoding.

Benchmarking the video I created, TCPMP reports max FPS is 38.43, original is 23.98 so I'm only running at 62% capacity.

I absolutely recommend Proporta. I've ordered two cases from them, the crystal case and the Alu-Leather book case for the T5. They ship VERY fast from the UK and their shipping costs are reasonable, not to mention the good quality cases for under $40US. I like the leather case, it looks very good and protects the screen well. They have similar leather cases for the Zire72 as well as an aluminum and a crystal case. The clear crystal case or silicone case would be great for geocaching!

The only other case company I like is Vaja. They are very expensive but quality, quality, quality. They have a case for the Zire72 here.

Very nice. I think we pretty much use the FUW the same way. I've ripped several DVDs like that for storage on my PC (all legal, I swear! ), and usually keep them to about 2GB for streaming to my TV. They look pretty good, too. I'll have to decide what resolution I want to rip my movies at, since I'm getting an Axim X50v w/VGA resolution. Maybe I'll do 320/240 or something around there.

What do you do for audio? Do you just let it rip the AC3 track or is there another option you use? Does the player you use read the AC3 track?

Those Vaja cases do indeed look nice. I just wish the Axim case wasn't so damn ugly! Why would that be the only color they offer??

When the time comes, I'm thinking of getting a Sena case. They look pretty nice as well, and have Palm cases too.

BetaPlayer works great on the PPC. I haven't tried to figure out what the max bit rate file it can play but it does a very nice job on all the Anime I've tried.

Why would you think they only have one color?

I rip to 112Kbps MP3, it just gives me better compression.

Holy cow! So I go from thinking they only have one ugly color to finding out they have more colors than any other vendor! Wow! I still maintain that there are a lot of colors that make me cringe, but there's a whole lot more options there than I thought there were! Very cool, thanks for the link
