I tried the 'automatic split & crop' feature of CS on some batch scans (4 photos, little space between them) and didn't have much luck.

You should do some research about how to use the Batch features of CS. You create an action using the 'Action' pallet and then use the Batch command to run it multiple times (File\Automate\Batch).

Essentially it's scripting for PS.

I don't have specific advice to lend on the exact how-to but it should be pretty straightforward. If you can make you scanner driver do a full page/full resolution scan by default then at most you might have to intervene once per scan to hit 'SCAN' in the TWAIN (or WIA) driver.

If you do scan multi-up images per scan, try leaving space between them, the automated tools might work better in that case.
