I did this a few years back. I scanned a thousand+ old family photos. I positioned the page on the scan bed and selected each individual image with color corrections applied to each. At the time, Microtek scanners came bundled with a great set of tools, ScanWizard I think, that made it easy to do. It is time consuming but it's really the only way to get the results that you want.
I did send out a couple of important photos thinking I would get better results but I got back sub-par scans. If it's one album, I'd say do it yourself.
